book

Hi Typophiles

I remember a while back I flipped through a book that, as far as I remember, was a small little black book that had one charactaristic letter from a different font per page. Now I really want to find out what the book was called - can anybody help?

Thanks!

Typeface-related Books

¶ I'd like to start a thread about typeface-related books.

1. Can the moderator create a section dedicated to typeface-related books?
2. Is there a place to purchase out of print typeface-related books?
3. Can you draw your list of out of print typeface-related books?

I don't know if it is the proper section to announce
a book release related to type.
Anyway, find a study about the company Linotype coming out in May.

Hi,
Please, can anbody update or correct my memory:
I faintly remember having read that in acient times among printers there was the tradition that up to three errors in a book would be regarded as "okay". The nickname for an error was "turtle" or, since I think the story took place in Italy, "tartaruga". Therefore a printer created his mark showing two turtles so that in the rest of the book only one more turtle (= mistake) could be expected. In doing so he referred to his superior quality.
I cannot find this story on the web. Is my memory wrong? Has anybody heard of a similar story? Thanks in advance for helpful suggestions!

It would be a great help to know, how much would i charge for designing a book by project (not by per hour). Charging by per hour are just minor changes. We cant keep track by charging the whole idea and design by per hour nor by per page. The book size is 280(h)x280(w)mm and pagination from 200-250pgs with hard cover.

Content for Quotation and how much:
1. Proposal on Concept Approach
2. Consultation on Concept
3. Design layout typography
4. Scan, photoshop, Illustrations/tracings graphics, search for stock images
5. Content Editing / Proofreading

Please do let me know if i missed out anything or whats the best idea.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.

regards,
Martin

Hi everybody,

I am designing a book series of utopian novels. There will be some classics of the genre and some less known books. Most of the novels are late 19th century but not all. I have to decide on the main typeface that will be used for the text. The texts will be in English with no other language requirements.
The concept of an "utopian" book typeface intrigues me but I have not reached any conclusion yet so I would like some suggestions.

I would prefer to use a relatively new typeface and so give some money to a living designer and not just Adobe. Also a kind of "contemporary" look (whatever that may mean) is part of the brief.

For no particular reason I am drawn to the idea of using something like Joanna...

Hello!

This is my first post, so I apologize if I miss some typophile-related etiquette. :)

Anyways, I need to design a book of eight theater plays. They are adaptations of kids' classics like Mary Poppins, Robin Hood, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and the like by a croatian author. However, the book is not targeted (only) towards kids, but to anyone interested in making these plays come to life---actors, directors, etc---and friends of a local town theater these plays originate from. The editor would like for the book to be as inviting as possible to read.

Plays are cheerful in tone and have a bit of a rural and/or 'retro' feeling to them. There is a subtle environmentalistic message which expands through all of the plays in the book.

For over five years I’ve photographed lettering, signs and tags, and published them on my blog ‘Mads knipser’. Now I’ve designed a book with a lot of the best. Over 100 pages of typographical snapshots, mostly from Copenhagen, but also Amsterdam, Berlin, Cairo, Dubai, Málaga, New York, Paris and Lisbon. Over 160 photographs showing many of the diverse expressions & designs the written word can contain. I wish to publish my book – and to succeed, I need to sell 184 copies.

The book is 30 x 30 cm, 104 pages.
Printed on 150 g Garda Matt.
1,5 kg.

More pictures of it on my my website: www.madshougaard.dk/mads-knipser-the-book/.
Feel free to contact me if you have questions.

I have a client seeking to publish an art book about an artists' life and to feature his paintings. He is asking me to do the design work, but I've never design a book to be published before. I know I need to register for copyright, ISBN, and library of congress #. Does anybody have experience in doing so and have suggestions on what publisher to look into. A Step by step guide is welcome.

Thanks,
Thao

Please help me id this type!

I'm selling my copy of House Industries' out-of-print Ten Year Book.
Slipcase and CD included.
Slipcase has a very small tear on the back, in the upper edge (pictured in photo #16), and minimal shelfwear on the corners and edges, mostly visible on the inside. The book itself is in excellent condition and appears new and unread. CD jacket attached in the back has never been opened.

Hello,

I am wondering what font is used in the book "A Streetcar Named Desire"--specifically the script and stage directions. A photo is attached (screencap from Amazon). More samples can be found at the Amazon look inside preview. The ISBN is 978-0-8112-1602-9.

Thanks!
Tom

As ever, many thanks for your time and expertise! This post is also related to an enquiry about a similar tpyeface used on a Hernan Bas catalogue from Germany which I will be posting next...

I'm designing a trade paperback: it's approximately 200 pages with the title & headings set in Proxima Nova. The book is non-fiction and about progressive religion/spirituality.

Any ideas of a good body font to use? Something clean, modern, forward-looking and extremely readable. Thanks for your suggestions!

Hello everybody,

which free fonts do you consider the best to publish books? I will self publish books under CC, that's why they must be free. There are some amazing ones that are non-free, especially from Adobe, but I couldn't fine anyone that was clean, light and elegant enough to provide a pleasant reading. So maybe you know some. ;)

By the way this website contains a description of "Stone Type Foundry", the same font in the attached image. I was astonished how beautiful and elegant it is, and I think it must be perfect to publish a book. Unfortunately it's paid. But what do you think of it? Just curious.

Thanks!

Veronika Burian's multi-award winning type family Maiola has grown even bigger. Its Pan-European OpenType Pro version now supports, in addition to Cyrillic and Latin A, full polytonic Greek. The calligraphic details of Maiola collaborate gracefully with each of the three scripts and generate a sense of consistent personality that creates a welcoming tension on the page. The polytonic extension was done by Greek specialist Irene Vlachou.

I bought a book this morning and really like the typeface used in the titles. Unfortunately, What the Font has fallen short and I haven't had any luck elsewhere. Any help would be appreciated.. Most typefaces I find in similar styles have 'a's that I'm not fond of (don't like the 'circle with a straight stick' look).

It has been suggested, many times, that the letterpress hobby could do with a modern guide-book aimed at the absolute beginner.

I have made an attempt to produce such a guide. Aimed at the beginner who would like to start printing from home “First Steps in Letterpress” runs through the purchase, setting up and running of a table-top platen press.

It gives the beginner an idea of the range of products that can be produced using the letterpress process, and the various methods of producing them. Traditional typesetting, photo polymer and lino printing are covered.

The book has a “Reference Section” listing suppliers of everything the beginner may need, both in the USA and UK.

Hello,

I am looking for the 2 typefaces used in these examples, the serif and the typewriter typefaces.
If you have any ideas, please let me know.

Thank you
