I'm organizing all the JPEGs I have of old type, adding tags as I go. The function that I'm trying to achieve is that through the filter function of Bridge be able to sort out the documents that contain the specific letters that I need so that I later can bring them into Illustrator and vectorize them.

To clarify, here is an example: Let's say I have a bunch of old woodtype samples, and I got the word Entertainment in one file and the word Literacy in another and Kong in the third. I need letters for the word ELK, and ointment. My current system is as follows that each tag is just for one letter. I.e E, n, t, e, r, a, i, m, (since Entertainment contains duplicates) and I've done this across all files.

Can anyone advise as to a "best practices" when managing the fonts on one's system?
I am going bonkers these days trying to manage all my typefaces. I use Linotype's Font Explorer, but it doesnt seem to do the job or i am doing something wrong. Of particular frustration is when running into multiple versions of one typeface (i.e. Futura — I have cuts from several different foundries and have to use them on different jobs, so i cant just trash the others— i turn them on and off as needed). And secondly, is there an alternative to Font Explorer? Do any of these Font Management Systems really beat all the others? Or are they all just the same? Which one is truly the BEST? Surely someone on Typophile can answer this?

Learned a lot and been amazed by your ID magic and type knowledge.
