Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows why on many 19th century type specimen prints they are often produced in black and red ink. Often they are black typefaces with a red border or decorative elements and sometimes both black and red typefaces. Just wondering if there is a reason for this use of colors. Thanks in advance.
We just released the second in our series "The Ten Commandments of George Lois." The quotation reads The creative act, the defeat of habit by originality, overcomes everything. When I first approached George about collaborating, this was his immediate suggestion and remains one of his more celebrated statements.
My favorite quote of his, "Great ideas can't be tested. Only mediocre ideas can be tested" was the first release in the series.
A portion of the proceeds from sales of this shirt will benefit the Herschel Levit scholarship fund at Pratt Institute, Mr. Lois' alma mater.

I have scoured google for answers/tutorials, but all I get is how to set path around a circle.
Anyone know how I would set type like this in inDesign?
Thanks,
Mat.
I'm working on a project about design by committee / consensus and I really need some help with it. Essentially the idea is to make a book with all the decisions about its design made within this forum. The aesthetics of the book - it's size, format, layout, typeface etc will all decided by the consensus in here.
Firstly, what do people think about the size of the book should be? And in terms of the title, I have two starting points - 'A Camel is a Horse Designed by Committee' and 'Too Many Cooks'.
I'd really appreciate any comments and suggestions on this project.
Thanks
Hi,
I was navigating by Andy Gugel's Portfolio on behance.net.
At the end of the page of "Adobe - better by you" ( http://www.behance.net/gallery/Adobe-Better-by-You/56095 )
there's a text "THE "BETTER BY YOU" CONCEPT BRINGS A COMMUNITY-BASED WEB ENVIROMENT TO ADOBE.COM WHERE USERS CAN UPLOAD...". The font used in this text is amazing for little details (something near from pixeldust) . I would love to know what is this font, i really need something like this, if you can help me.
I'm a finalist doing a project on 'Fakery'..
How can the general public spot they are using a fake typeface? Do they need to be educated?
If a book on fakery was produced. What would you like to see in it? Doesn't have to on just the subject of fake typefaces but whatever I produce will just be typographic..
What is your opinion on Fake Typefaces or Fake stuff in general?
Please help.
Thanks,
Noono24.
Hello there,
I am pretty sure many/most of you have noticed DIESEL's amazing latest viral/campaign called 'Kick-Ass'. It's for their sneakers, not as big as 'Be Stupid' but still, so good!
I'm thinking they must be using a form of Bodoni as 2nd font (for the supers under the main titles- Great for kicking asses). And the first font on the title (DIESEL Sneakers. Not Made For Running) kind of reminded me Ziggurat in the first place but it is not. Pretty Sheriff though...
Does anyone know which are these 2 fonts used in the campaign? Below are some links of prints and videos. Thanks a lot in advance!

This image was captured yesterday by my nephew's wife at the Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart's Washington D.C. rallies:

Its nice to see that type has made it into the political mainstream (though, I personally am quite fond of Times New Roman.) Here's an article on the event though, woefully, they did not cover the font moment. http://theweek.com/article/index/207253/stephen-colbert-and-jon-stewarts...

Due to several requests and many of you creative types (excuse the pun) not having had time to get round to organising your submissions for our first Type Annual, we've decided to be accommodating and extend the deadline. You now have until November 5 to submit your entries.
We've also added a new judge to our panel. John Bateson, acting Course Director at the UAL MA Graphic branding and identity course
and current Chairman of the Typographic Circle Association will be joining Mark, Coralie, Andy and Fiona.
The Creative Review Type Annual will be published with next February's issue.

Hey,
I'm in the middle of a town branding project for the city of Elk Horn in Iowa. The city has the largest percentage population of Danish residents in America. It also boasts the only Danish windmill to ever leave Denmark.
Our group has only just started the ideation and conceptualizing a series of symbols and color schemes to represent the town.
We are searching for possible typeface solutions to use throughout the signage for the town.
In our research we came up with these two typefaces being used as signage in Europe. I think the team overall appreciates the large x-height and overall verticality.
If anyone can identify these typefaces or point me in the direction of any alternatives that would be great.
A job opportunity to work in Adobe's Type Development team has just become available. If you're interested please read the details at http://blogs.adobe.com/typblography/2010/10/special-opening-in-adobe-type-staff.html
For one week only we are excited to be able to offer you an exclusive
discount on entries for the first ever Type Annual awards. Between now and Wednesday October 20 we are delighted to offer you a £5 discount on single entries and £15 on group entries. Simply register below.
The Type Annual will showcase typeface design itself rather than work that uses type, creating, we hope, a showcase of the best crafted, most innovative and most exciting typefaces produced during entry period – October 2009 to October 2010.
To be eligible for inclusion, typefaces must have been first released or used within this period. Selected work will be printed in a special February issue of Creative Review.

Hi there typohiles,
Long-time lurker, first post.
I'm looking into my report for my final year
at university, the topic I’m most interested to write
about is word recognition & typography. I think
there could a really angle with the new turns in type
with alot more of the "experimental" typefaces
being ultra-bold, nearly illegible & in alot of cases
lacking a proper family with no lowercase also
compared to say Gill, Helvetica, Futura etc.
In my first year I read a interesting article
on "The science of word recognition" in Eye 52, I’ve
gone back to that article and found Kevin
Larson's paper to be of real interest, the only thing
I’m struggling with now is finding the right
literature to reference from.
Any help on this would be great, I’m still on
I am part of a small studio called People Collective and we are starting a new project/experiment in the creation and distribution of type. We have written a blog post that details our plans here but in short, hope to fund the creation of a typeface through KickStarter. We'd really like to hear your thoughts on both the creation/distribution concept and the specific design options we post to the blog over the coming weeks, thanks!

I've been looking for a variety of good fonts that are based off old wood type specimens from the good 'ol days. I knew this would be the place to ask. Anyone know of some good digitally revived wood type fonts?

Thanks,
Aaron
