Creating an ageing/vintage effect on typographic designs

Hello,
I've just seen a beautiful piece of design work by Stranger and Stranger. Does anyone know how they created the ageing effect on the gold?

The general distressing of the gold areas could be done by PASTING INTO the selected areas with a funky texture. For the lettering, adding an outside stroke and using DISSOLVE could achieve a similar effect with the type.
