Diablo mystery font - not Exocet/Dogma/AvQuest!

Eloa's picture

Hello everyone,

does anyone happen to know the name of the attached font?

It has been used by Blizzard Entertainment for their video games Diablo II, Diablo II: Lord of Destruction and apparently Diablo III (picture is from that game's website). It is not the Exocet/Dogma/AvQuest font (googling "Diablo fonts" only led to this typeface). I am also pretty sure it is not a custom font that is only available to them as Blizzard tend towards using free fonts for their interface designs.

Any clues? Your help is very much appreciated!

Kind regards,
Eloa

This looks like an old film type called Oscar, shown in the Solotype Catalog (p.103). Presumably there is a digitized version of this, but I have not been able to find it by this name.

Mike F. is pretty good at knowing digital equivalents for revived typefaces. Mike are you out there?

Oscar, designed by Aldo Novarese in 1966. Bitstream’s version is called Formal 436. Cf Trump’s Codex.

Formal 436 is the right one (too bad Bitstream doesn't credit the original name). Good work Steve. Codex, however, is not the same, as you recognized, though similar.
