The Seven Deadly Sins

toma717's picture

First project in my graduate studio class is to design something that involves an aspect of the seven deadly sins. Basically there is no brief for this project and the only guidelines are the seven deadly sins. Does anyone have any good ideas??

Buy the worst porn magazine you can find and redesign it.

I might think you were too good for that project but that would be hubris.

The seven deadly sins don't carry much clout these days.

People are always saying how proud they are, of themselves, or someone else.
It's become a civic virtue.

And yet pride is the most serious of the sins.

Think: Tiger Woods, Ben Rothlesberger, Rush Limbaugh, Paris Hilton, George W Bush, Lindsay Lohan, Bernie Madoff

I love that idea dezcom!

Actually, I think you're on a good start with Sloth ;-)

The seven deadly typography sins: lacking necessary ligatures, sqooushed or stretched letterforms, inch mark instead of curly qoutes, rivers, widows and orphans, lack of optical alignment and all caps as emphasis in text.

If you're going for Pride and need to do some research; Check out what C S Lewis writes about pride in his book "Mere Christianity".
Might help to widen the views a bit (or at least so I recall...).

To paraphrase a Jay Leno joke, porn magazines are for the 5 guys who haven't discovered the internet yet. :)

Years ago I was involved in a gift exchange at work where you picked someone's name out of a hat and had to give them small gifts anonymously over the year; then at the office Christmas party each person would try to guess who had been giving them gifts. I decided to use the 7 deadly sins as a theme for my gifts. I gave the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue to represent "lust", and little bag of coin-shaped chocolates for "greed", etc. Can't remember the rest, but anyway it was fun.

I think Ricardo hit the male on the head ;-)

The Seven Deadly Sins have become Advertising 101; Apple is particularly good at promoting Pride and Envy...

Nick Shinn's picture

Creativity in advertising is a sin.
What's created are stretched benefits that have nothing at all to do with the environmental footprint of a product or service.
A purchase should be an environmental assessment, not a glamour trip.

Compile a hundred or so sins and choose seven at random.

What do I do with the seven random ones I chose?

Thomas, can you give us more info? Is the class focused solely on typography? Is there any hint of what size & format your project should be presented in? Any idea what your professor is expecting, or of what he's expecting exercises like this to teach you?

dezcom's picture

Thomas, surely you can easily jump in to this project and come up with dozens of ideas? Just relax and let it happen.

dez, I like your seven celebs idea!

Each one could be accompanied by a specific typeface: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, Georgia, Papyrus, Times New Roman, and Impact -- just so Thomas has the perfect excuse to use 7 of the 8 type 101 banned fonts list :-D

dezcom's picture

LOL!!!
You must have Trajan, Curls, and Comic Sans in there, though!

Industrial warning posters.

1. luxuria (extravagance) : a spencerian script (pompous)
2. gula (gluttony) : Clarendon Black (heavy)
3. avaritia (avarice/greed) : Helvetica (for trying to dominate the world)
4. acedia (acedia/discouragement): Comic Sans (disrespectful)
5. ira (wrath) : Futura (spikes kills)
6. invidia (envy) : Trajan (invokes envy)
7. superbia (pride) : Optima (it's the best)

Frode Bo Helland's picture

Luxuria should be a worldwide exclusive custom typeface by Bram de Does.

Tiago (typographer), using a different set of sins I imagined my list as this:

1. wrath = Arial -- the wrath of the screen
2. greed = Verdana -- devouring space
3. sloth = Helvetica -- obvious
4. pride = Georgia -- Look! Look! I'm a real font!
5. lust = Papyrus -- look at me, I'm famous
6. envy = Times New Roman -- obvious
7. gluttony = Impact -- obvious

The fonts come from the "101 Banned Fonts" discussion because it was argued there one should not use any of these fonts ... unless you had a good reason!

Dez you forgot, Ann Coulter, she's all of the deadly sins rolled into one.

I was afraid that speaking her name would conger her up ;-)

I had this assignment as well. I just based my designs on the punishments because eeeeeeeeeverybody does this assignment about the sins.
