iPad with Better H+J Settings?

Ehague's picture

Just got an iPad at work. Is there anything with a better composition engine than the native books app on the horizon? It's hurting my soul trying to reconcile the dumb css-style full justification with any conception of this thing as a book killer.

Quincunx's picture

They didn't fix that in the final product? That's pretty bad...

A Typecon pint says that no mainstream review* (except maybe Gruber) even mentions the sub-standard typography. In fact I think the opposite will be true (if not already) - the reviews will say the ebook experience is great - it's a Kindle killer. :-)

Cheers, Si

*not related to the Apple-halo effect , they don't mention it for any ebook product.

I'll take that pint, Si. My review goes up on the FontFeed tomorrow.

Stephen Coles's picture

Wait, maybe I'm not mainstream…

@sii

I do not want to buy an iPad. But as a guy who blogs about screen readability I might have to. (I have a Kindle and an iRex.)

Do you consider Readable Web mainstream?
If so - if you make that pint a pitcher, it might tip the decision...

Stephen and Richard - TyepCon pints to anyone (mainstream or not) who calls for better typography on these devices! :-)

>[no one] mentions the sub-standard typography

Maybe... having a wire, a mouse, a blurry batch of pixels, and standard typography is not all it's cooked up to be?

>If so - if you make that pint a pitcher, it might tip the decision...

He's talking about beer Rich, and imagine a place where the justification is the biggest problem, so far... ;)

Cheers!

Call me Old School...or simply call me old...but I just can't handle reading lengthy texts on-screen, any screen, any device. Give me good, old-fashioned ink on a page: no batteries required.

Ah, the truth behind the Century Gothic conspiracy. :_)

So looks like the pint is earned :-)

The article referenced by sii says, in the first paragraph:
The possibilities for reviving the magazine and newspaper industries are exciting and real.

Yeah? How?
Dream on.

William Berkson's picture

>Yeah? How?

Mathias Döpfner, head of Axel Springer, in a recent Charlie Rose interview (you have to scroll down on Recent Shows) explains how.

John Hudson's picture

Bill, what's the date of that Charlie Rose interview? The scroll feature on that site is not responding well to my trackball, whizzing past the entries and making it very difficult to scan for Döpfner's name.

John Hudson's picture

Never mind: found it. 6 April 2010.

135 dpi + embedding or linking + real zoom + rendering symmetry?

Free Beer!

Rob O. Font's picture

Really!

...the problems Mod et al scratch at with their tiny kitty claws, are so superficial compared to: bad resolution, inconsistent font support, ClearType, html 'zoom' and mice, as to be insignificant to the future of this exciting platform.

Cheers!

Stephen Coles's picture

I love tiny kitty claws! What an honor!

A new venue for the pints :-)

Rob O. Font's picture

Aha! I knew there was a catch. I had one of those pubs as part of my HO scale toy train set. So I know they serve 1 milliliter pints.

Cheers!
