"sagitta 35" compact bold sans serif, from brochure of a sailing boat of the same name (60s)

Hello,
I am trying to identify this font. It looks like Swiss 911 ultra compressed, but it isn't really an exact match.

Anyone with better ideas?

From where comes the sample?

gijssier's picture

It's from a brochure for a sailing boat of this name, probably from the sixties.

Well, this is a pre-digital typeface, so chances are likely that this exact rendition of the typeface never made it to a digital font. Do you need the closest digital alternative, or do you just want a name?

For the former: that would be Helvetica Extra Compressed, no? ;-)

Not exactly; the tops of the curves are rounder and heavier. The numerals are definitively Compacta.

Of course, I was referring to ‘the closest digital alternative’ part.
Compacta? Indeed! I always forget about that one. Should use your lists more often …

I agree with Compacta for the numerals, and Helvetica Extra Compressed (although it could have been slightly more compressed) seems indeed a close match for the name, Helvetica being, I presume, the original to Swiss. Thanks a lot for your help!

There’s even an Ultra Compressed – but that seems to be too narrow.

Yes, Swiss 911 is Bitstream’s version of Helvetica.

Swiss 924 is Bitstream's version of Hanseatic, and appears slightly rounder at the top of the curves.
