How did Decoder Ring do it?!

I navigated my way over to to see what The Decoder Ring Design Concern had crackin' and noticed this HUGE "HELLO!" Here's my question: is there an easy way to do the 3D letter thing? I know that it's possible to do in Illustrator with the 3D "tool", but the type isn't forward facing anymore.

@paul d hunt, any place in particular in that book? I've got it pulled up on Google Books

Note that to do a shadow in a different color (even grey, like the example) requires that the shadow be a separate font from the main letters.
