Adding to this older thread, you can get Mathematica to create interesting designs, simply by connecting points with semi-circles. See Minimum Inventory, Maximum Diversity.

Crop circles? The "Heroes" sigil? The one from "Threshold" is slightly more complicated -- a three-way symmetry.
