Typophiles might be interested in reading Johanna Drucker's reviews of Meggs' and Hollis's graphic design histories. It's available for free online as part of the inaugural issue of Design and Culture.

Thanks for linking to this article, Craig, and for giving notice of a new design magazine.

You're welcome. I should probably also link to the organization behind the journal, which is the Design Studies Forum.

Thanks for the heads-up, Craig.

The Origins of Graphic Design in America by Ellen Mazur Thomson, 1997, is far and away the best "cultural studies" history of design I've come across.

Due credit to Meggs though, he established a canon, which enhanced the status of the profession.
