'Shaping the Page' for a Handout, any ideas?

SebastianWolf's picture

Hey guys, this is my first post.

I put together this simple page for a presentation I gave yesterday.

My problem is that I don't feel the text 'sits' well on the large A4 page. It's got to be on A4 for various reasons, so my question is:
How could I place this text layout more effectively on the page? Are there any guidelines you could give for setting text on A4?

A point I've noticed: it looks like the Futura caps at the top need re-kerning.

You might try pushing everything up a bit and adding some more vertical space between your name and the title. But, I would definitely increase the leading between your individual points under each header…right now they look like paragraphs without puctuation.

I'd get rid of the indentation and create a stronger hierarchy by having a greater range of point sizes. Also, get rid of the space below the sub-headings.

And then maybe nudge everything slightly more to the left.

HAHA Quincunx, that's exactly what I was after. I feel that it sits a bit uneasily on the page.
When I first did this, I had the text over to the left more and with a column implied by the placement of the name in small caps. I guess it was a good idea.

Your type is about 33 mm from the left edge of the page.
Try something like 20 mm, see if that's better. :)

Maybe nudging everything slightly up too, but first see what happens once everything is more to the left.

Okay, I'll re-jig the layout and repost here a little later. Thanks so much for all the feedback, guys. Really appreciated.

I made the suggested modifications and was really pleased to see just how much better the page looked.

Thanks a lot for the advice. If there's any more ideas, just gimme a shout.

I think it's fine now. :)
