Detail in typography
Jost Hochuli

-- a concise work of introduction and reference
-- the book is an immaculately produced demonstration of its topic
-- written with a light touch

In *Detail in typography* a master book-designer provides a concise guide to setting text. Opening with a consideration of how human beings read, he works from small to larger: from the letter, and the word and word-space, through the line and line-space, and on to what makes whole paragraphs work as carriers of intelligible meaning. This is more than a guide to correct typography. How is it, Hochuli asks, that text can be set perfectly and yet look insufferably dull? Answers may be found by looking at the way in which his own book has been set, and in the way in which it has been produced.

This is a version of the book first published in 1987, now fully adapted to the problems of English-language typography. We have worked from the German-language revised edition, published in 2005 by Niggli Verlag in Switzerland. The English translation is by Charles Whitehouse.
