Going to Typo-Berlin 2004?

dan_reynolds's picture

Back a January we had a little thread going about people going to Typo-Berlin, and maybe a little gathering of Typophiles there. Is anyone still interested?

Stephen,

You can fly from Stockholm S. Skavsta (NYO) to Hamburg Lübeck (LBC) on 12 May 04 with Ryan Air (FR9701) 13:55-15:20 (bookryanair.com). It costs a total of 156 SEK (approx. 17 EUR). You can then get a bus to Lübeck Hbf (train station), then a train from Lübeck Hbf to Berlin Friedrichstr. The train departs 16:36 (ICE express train, arrives 20:28) or 17:03 (RE regular train, arrives 20:51). For the latter, you pay 35 EUR, so the entire travel costs you 52 EUR plus some bus charges.

No idea (really). In Berlin, I never stay in hotels (it's just 80 km from where I live, and I've got quite a few friends there.)

Typo Berlin 2004 is at:
Haus der Kulturen der Welt
John-Foster-Dulles-Allee 10
10557 Berlin

Go to: http://42.pl/url/4uS
The red flag you see is the conference location. "Pariser Platz" is where the Brandenburger Tor is. The easiest way to get there is to go by S-Bahn to "Berlin Unter den Linden", switch to Bus number 100 direction "Zoologischer Garten" and exit at the 3rd stop which is right at the front of the conference building. BTW: You can download the PDF plan of the Berlin public transport from http://www.bvg.de/plan/liniennetz.html

If you want to check the route by train, bus or subway from virtually any place in Europe (e.g. from the hotel you intend to book), you can go to http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?ld=105&searchMode=ADVANCED
there, enter the starting point of your choice and put "Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin" as your destination station. You'll get detailed travel description.

BTW: I will be looking into available hotels tonight.

Hotel tips: You can start with going to http://www.yellowmap.de/ymcity/?CSS=&ID=669B6901-C962-425D-967D-9F7D10733814

Then, under Branchen, select Kategorie: Unterkunft, Unterbranche: Hotels, Suchen. The map will show red dots as hotels. I recommend that you move a bit to the North, to the West or to the East (but not to the South) and look for affordable locations.

Hotel Villa Kastania is pretty close to the conference location and has doubles for 120 EUR/night. As you can see, there are quite a few locations between Invalidenstr (North from the Unter den Linden) and Leipziger Str (South from the Unter den Linden).

Ideally, look for locations along S1/S2 S-Bahn line (stations: Nordbahnhof, Oranienburger Str), U6 subway line (Zinnowitzer Str, Oranienburger Tor) and along the main East-West train/S-Bahn line (Ostbahnhof, Jannowitzbrücke, Alexanderplatz).

A few of my Czech friends and I will be staying at the "Artist Hotel Riverside":

http://www.yellowmap.de/Eintragsarten/Home.asp?EBINR=XWGX17292335BTPJ61
http://www.great-hotel.com/willkommen.html

You can try getting a room there (approx. 60 EUR/night) -- their phone is +49 30 284900.

If you want it cheap, you can go to the Hotel-Pension Aacron (Friedrichstr. 124, phone +40302829352). It's basically a hostel, you can get a double for 40 EUR, with showers on the corridor. It's fairly well-located, just at the Oranienburger Tor subway station.

You may also try H./G./K. Hotel, Am Weidendamm 1A, Phone +49303152661 which is just at the river, close to Friedrischstr (but I've never been there).

Happy hunting :-)

Best,
Adam

Of course, the Aacron phone number should be +49 30 2829352.

Berlin is super-cool. This will be my second visit, but my first design conference.

twardoch's picture

Hello all,

On May 13-15, the Typo Berlin 2004 conference will be held in the capital city of Germany: http://www.typo-berlin.de/

While visiting Berlin is surely a unique experience, most certainly, not everybody will be able to attend the conference. But there's the remedy: there will be an Internet radio streaming from the conference, hosted by the Underware guys: http://www.typeradio.org/

I expect this to be fun so try to reserve your time!

I was just about to get a hotel room and then I realized how
pricey Stockholm-to-Berlin plane flights are. Nuts.

Stephen Coles's picture

Well, shoot.

Stephen Coles's picture

Wow, Adam! My new travel agent of choice. Hotel recommendation?

tamye's picture

Adam, thanks for all the cool info!

I am going to be there as well. This will be my first trip to Berlin, and I'm really excited. We definitely need to get everyone together, as lots of our typo friends will be there.
