I have been given the task of proposing a redesign of national geographic magazine for my junior typography class. I’m trying to decide on a new type face for the banner title that has the same presence and authority as the current Times New Roman Condensed, but in a sans. Any suggestions?

Asking others — I guess this is homework 2.0?

Hi Grant.

I’d recommend OPTIMA.

Good luck!

That may be impossible.

That’s like your painting professor asking you to repaint the Mona Lisa.

Try a radical approach, maybe Helvetica Condensed.

Actually National Geographic uses a sans for pretty much all of it’s branding except the magazine masthead. Take a look at their website.

Choose a couple reliable workhorse typefaces and focus on designing the magazine: Structure, grid, color, photo, etc. Don’t waste time looking for a flashy face to save the day.

I agree with typical

the teacher should be giving assignments that are achievable
