Research direction on the origin of families

I need to track down the origins of fonts being sold and marketed as families. If I recall correctly ATF was the first foundry to do so at some point in the late Nineteenth or early Twentieth Century and so I should probably start there. Am I pointed in the right direction?

I would go to the library and look through the Inland Printer in the 1880s and 90s.

James, Sebastian Carter's Twentieth Century Type Designers has a chapter on the ATF, and if I remember correctly, he discusses this a bit.

But it looks like Nick is pointing you in the direction of actual period documents.
