Typophiler's Take Tea Together at TypeCon 2003

Miss Tiffany's picture

Who's Going? Who needs a roommate? Who wants to meet up and hang out?? I thought it would be a good think to hook up with others and go out to eat ... or something.

John Hudson's picture

I'll be there: my first TypeCon.

PYMadlon's picture

I want to go, but I'll be moving. Who wants to pick up a t-shirt for me?

See you all at the next TypeCon!

jcoltz's picture

Tiffany and John,

I'm one of the local crew; it'll be my pleasure to meet you here in Minneapolis in a month. If you would like any information about the Twin Cities, or if there's any way I can be of assistance to you prior to your visit, please let me know. That goes for the rest of you, too!

And Paul, we'll make sure you get a shirt...

See you at TypeCon2003,

Jon

John Hudson's picture

Thanks, Jon. Any good second hand or antiquarian bookstores?

Miss Tiffany's picture

Well. I have to admit I thought there'd be a few more posts. But, John, I'm happy to see you will be there. This is my first TypeCon as well. Jon, Thank you for your offer. Are either of you signed up for any of the classes?

Stephen, Joe and Jared will be there. And Tayme, obviously.

If you promise not to make me actually drink tea, I'll be happy to drink something else at TypeCon.

Are either of you signed up for any of the classes?

I'm not, but will probably hang out and lend a hand at the FontLab class.

Diner's picture

I promise options-a-plenty at the Friday evening reception!

I plan to unveil a new automatic cocktail making machine to serve all 250 in attendence.

Take a sneek peek at: http://www.lazydrinker.com and scroll down to view the 9Meg movie

Stuart :D

kentlew's picture

Yeah, James don' drinnk no steenking tea -- heh heh.

I'll be there, of course. Looking forward to meeting you in person, Tiff -- hanging out, talking WAD, you know. Didn't mean to ignore your post, I've just been busy getting stuff ready for the Whitman release (soon, very soon . . . )

Looking forward to meeting you too, John. And Jon. I'll be attending the Font Lab workshop on Thursday. I'll probably be floating in and out of things on Friday.

Other than that, I'm up for hanging out and drinking whatever.

See you there.

I live right here in Minneapolis and have made plans to attend the conference. Unfortunately, I have not signed up for any of the workshops since I'm broke as a joke having just graduated college with no real job prospects.

As far as antiquarian bookstores go, I'm not the greatest person to ask, but I do know of a few.

There's a store downtown on Nicolet Mall (pronounced NICK-eh-let, don't ask why) called James and Mary Laurie booksellers. I haven't perused their book selection, but they have a huge basement full of classical and jazz records.

There's another large store equidistant from the two downtowns on University ave called Midway Used and Rare Books. Here's their website so you can check it out in advance.

Hope this helps.

tamye's picture

I'll be there early... Sunday or Monday. Anyone else in town early, let me know so we can get together. Maybe we could do dinner Wed. night with the local crew. Would be fun.

Off the top of my head, more Typophiliacs coming:

John Butler, Sean Michael Chavez, Keith Tam, John Baichtal, Rich Kegler, Eric Olson, Jon Coltz, Mark Simonson

And, hey, there is someone looking for a non-smoking female roommate (yes, she's also female). Anyone interested, email me, and I'll hook you up.

jcoltz's picture

John,

I have had experience with only a few antiquarian book shops in the area.

(1) Rulon-Miller is located in St. Paul; they have a nice typography selection, but are open by appointment only:
http://www.rulon.com
(approx. 7 miles from hotel)

(2) Lien's, in Minneapolis, is close to the hotel, and is also very good...
http://www.liensbooks.com
(approx. 2 miles from hotel)

(3) A lot of people like Magers & Quinn, too:
http://www.citypages.com/bestof2000/boughtandsold/bestof828.asp
(approx. 3 miles from hotel)

(4) Finally, Loome Antiquarian Booksellers is 30 minutes out of the Twin Cities, but well worth the trip:
http://www.loomebooks.com/booktown/valley.html
(approx. 25 miles from hotel)

Twin Citians: This list is undoubtedly incomplete; please add your favorites!

I'll be there. It will be my first, too. I feel lucky that it's right in my neck of the woods and that I was able to be involved in it. It will be great to finally meet in person so many people I have gotten to know online. (We designed the name tags to be readable more than two feet away.)

I'm attending three of the workshops: The Glass Guilding Demo and Paper Banner Demo on Thursday, and Ken Barber's workshop on Friday. There were other workshops I wanted to do, but many of them were being held at the same time. It was a tough choice, but I think I would have been happy no matter what I picked.

I still have a ton of stuff to do before the conference and I'm at a family reunion for almost a week beforehand. Busy, busy, busy. See you there!

tsprowl's picture

I'm still trying to work out whether I can make it or not (projects in mid swing...trying to finish them up) but if I do make it I'd love to go for lunch and meet everyone. I have a friend in Minneapolis that I might be staying with - he's got the goods on some places too, namely, we wanna go and hang with Prince at Pasley Palace. but anywho...if I make it - I'll be the girl with ridiculously long red ponytails - come get me!

typotect's picture

Ahhh Paisley Park.

If you get there on the right night you might just get in to see prince perform on his tiny sound stage for free. I don't think he has done too many shows lately though, and after a year of trying to guess which night he was going to play, I finally gave up. His studio and home are in Chanhassen, about 30 min from downtown. If you're a prince fanatic it might be worth the pilgramige.

sean's picture

I'll be attending Digital Font Production 101,
the Calligraphy workshop and Ken Barber's
workshop. When I'm not attending my drinks
that is. I'm in for meeting up.

Thanks for those bookstore leads Jon!

See you there!

benkiel's picture

I'll also be there, driving up from Saint Louis on wednesday. I'm planning to help out, so I'm not going to any of the workshops. I'll be the shy one with short red hair.

eolson's picture

I'll be there too.
I'm going to be in the Fontlab workshop on Thursday and hitting every lecture I can for the rest of the weekend. Anyone know how we rsvp for the Carter lecture at the Walker?

John Hudson's picture

Jon, thanks for the bookseller info. Very much appreciated. I'll certainly be hitting some of these.

tamye's picture

Eric, you're on the list for the Carter/Blauvelt event at the Walker. You RSVP'd at the time you registered. Easy!

eolson's picture

Great. Wasn't too sure about that.

ashwiny's picture

Hi kent

so can you tell me what happens during the TypeCon2003, may be u can send me some leaflets and tshirts!!!!! booklets etc etc if you would not mind, or some pics too.

may be in the near future i can attend it too.

Miss Tiffany's picture

Tayme --- That is the Thursday "Evening at the Walker Art Center" correct? Please tell me I RSVP'd that.

Miss Tiffany's picture

Kent -- We could almost have a Dwigginsfest. ;)

kentlew's picture

Tiff -- You know I'm there, girl!

Ashwini -- Perhaps some devout Typophilers will post reviews and updates here on these boards for those who cannot attend. I'll try to post a note or two, if I get a chance, but I can't promise anything.

Flexible non-smoking female seeks roommate for TypeCon... email me to hook up.

In other news, we've just posted some tidbits on the amazing Typeface Twin Cities session (featuring LettError, Peter Bilak, Optimo, Sibylle Hagmann, Conor Mangat, and our own Eric Olson!). Also, more details and some artwork by John Downer about his glass gilding and sign painting workshops.

It's getting close, and we are psyched! It's going to be a really great show. Can't wait to see you there...

tamye's picture

Regarding the woman looking for a roommate - she asked me to add that she's arriving in Minneapolis Thursday and departing Monday.

tamye's picture

Tiffany, sorry I didn't see your post before. Yes, you RSVP'd for Matthew's event at the Walker :-)

armin's picture

I really don't know why I haven't posted sooner to Typophile. But by golly, I will start to do so more regularly.

It will be my first TypeCon too and I will be along Joe, Jon, Stephen and Jared in the "blog" panel. Yes, I'm the only Graphic Designer amongst "Hard-core Typographers."

jcoltz's picture

Armin,

Welcome -- glad to see you here!

As for your attendance at TypeCon, fear not. You'll perhaps find that more than a few of us actually prefer soft-core typography.

Jon

Hello... I'll be there! Looking forward to meeting you all in Minneapolis! It's going to be my first TypeCon, and I'm really excited. I've signed up for John Downer's paper banner demo and Ken Barber's learn lettering from traditional type. Should be fun! I'll be arriving on the 16th. I'm coming to the event at Walker's on the 17th... see you all there? Anyone else arriving on the 16th?

John Hudson's picture

Yes, I'm arriving on the 16th. What flight are you taking from Vancouver, Keith?

Also, is anyone looking for a room to share? I have a non-smoking room with an extra bed booked for five nights (July 16-20, depart 21st), and would be happy to split the cost with someone.

Miss Tiffany's picture

I'm going for total and absolute lettering and calligraphy overload.

Tony de Marco, the editor of Brazil's Tupigrafia magazine, is coming to TypeCon. He's looking for a roommate at the Radisson, and he'll be arriving Thursday and departing Monday. Tony's a great guy, a little wild, and anyone hanging out with him is guaranteed to have a great time.

Tony also posted pictures from TypeCon2001 in Rochester - http://www.nada.com.br/typecon/

Email Tony at tony@macmania.com.br

I need a roommate, but that's moot if I don't find a cost effective way to get there.

tamye's picture

I can hardly believe it... in 2 weeks, we'll be at TypeCon2003!

Quick reminder: the last day to register for TypeCon2003 at the regular rates is next Tuesday, July 8th. After that, late registration fees will be in effect. Register before midnight Central Time on Tuesday and save up to $100.

Happy 4th to everyone in the US! Everyone else, sneak out early...

imagineer's picture

Guess what, typefolk!

I am most likely going to be attendance - sans fontlover buttons/stickers, so don't bug me for them. I'm posting regarding the somewhat vague information on admission fees. Is there just a one-time registration fee covering the whole conference or is there an additional fee that must be paid daily? I know workshops are seperate and cost money, but I need to know how much I'm going to be dishing out.

ALSO, if anyone is not aware, I will probably be the youngest attendee (If I make it there). I appear 21 but am actually 18....not that I drink or anything....

Is anyone also aware of any financial corners that can be cut (i.e. volunteering for admisson, kerning fonts, whoring a foundry, etc.)? I approached Tamye with some suggestions but she never replied to my e-mail(I'm assuming she's busy heh).

Any info would be appreciated!

tamye's picture

Milan, the admission fee is one price for the main conference. There are no additional charges except for optional workshops.

We had plenty of volunteer positions available earlier, but all those spots are filled. Sadly, we have no fonts to kern. I don't know about "whoring" a foundry - you'll have to approach the individual companies and see what kind of response you get. Using slightly different terminology would be more likely to produce positive results.

FYI, the first email I've ever received from you arrived late Thursday night. I replied to you yesterday afternoon before taking a few hours off to see the fireworks with my little boy. Shocking, I know ;)

If you're going to TypeCon, be sure and register by Tuesday - it's only $125 for 3 days of typographic goodness, and some free munchies for starving type-aholics like yourself. After Tuesday, late registration is $200.

imagineer's picture

"We had plenty of volunteer positions available earlier, but all those spots are filled."

Were these volunteer positions that included benefits?

"Using slightly different terminology would be more likely to produce positive results. "

We all need a little vulgarity in our lives to balance out the 'dullness'. I didn't mean to offend.

"FYI, the first email I've ever received from you arrived late Thursday night. I replied to you yesterday afternoon..."

I think my email is bugged. I just searched my inbox/trash for any e-mail from you and there was no result.

cph's picture

Stuart, that lazy drinker thing reminds me of one of the final projects in my robots class. (They made us take the videos down, sorry.)

cph's picture

Just wanted to say my plane tickets are purchased, I'm registered, and I'm amped for TypeCon.

Miss Tiffany's picture

Well, no one has asked this, and it might as well be me. -- What is the dresscode for TypeCon?

hrant's picture

I've only been to one TypeCon, and it was the first one, so I can't be sure, but from the pictures and reviews it seems like it's the most casual conference out there. So probably wear whatever you enjoy wearing! But whatever you do, don't wear what Don Hosek was wearing in '98: a three-piece pin-striped suit... Bejeezus.

Tiffany --

In my experience, it's pretty much Come As You Are ;-)

PYMadlon's picture

Pocket-protector and sliderule manditory. Argyle socks and white boat shoes optional.

Don't forget my t-shirt!

:-)

hrant's picture

You know he didn't bother with underwear, right?

hhp

John Hudson's picture

Right, that settles it. I'm wearing my kilt.

hrant's picture

John Downer took his shirt off again? He did that during the auction in ATypI-Rome. Was he brandishing a champagne bottle this time too?
