there are many gorgeous serif style typefaces with beautiful flourishes. http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/canadatype/ambassador-script/flourishes/
does anyone know of a typeface with flourishes that appear more sans serif, if that makes any sense?

Hi Emma,
there’s a picture of Univers Flair and Franklin Gothic Flair in this old thread. Someone couldn’t resist to do Helvetica Flair, too, scroll down this interview with Phil Martin at Typopraphica.

i do apologise - flourish may not be the correct terminology. i'm talking more about symbols i think (take a look at the link i posted?).
