Type Battle: Typo-O-Lantern Pumpkin Carving
Halloween 2007
// Rules
1- Carve, cut, etch, &c., your typographic design, letterform or mark into a pumpkin or other gourd.
2- Post a photograph (600 x 400 please) of your entry in this thread. Feel free to inform us about your method, inspiration, &c. but the best entries will speak for themselves.
3- As with other type battles, this starts on a Monday and ends this Friday (which happens to be 2 days after Halloween, no points will be reduced with November entries).
// Judging & Prizes
As with any street battle, there is no panel of judges and no prize — only the ability to call yourself the best on the block.

Ah, nice, a battle. Don't think I will be joining this one, unfortunately. But I've never participated in a battle on typophile before, since they sorta stopped just before I joined. I would like to see a return of the Type Battles. :)

As a representative and long time supporter of PETV (People for the Ethical Treatment of Vegetables) I have to protest about this outrage. Slashing into an innocent gourd for no good reason (not even a prize). Vegetables have feeling too, you know. They shouldn't be treated as mere food or amusement devices for unthinking people.
Don't carve your pumpkin, talk to it ... it is -kin- after all.
29.Oct.2007 10.14am
1. Bought the pumpkin.
2. Following Don's argument, realized it is -kin- to Pump, a fairly horrible face.
3. Started hacking at pumpkin.
4. Ending up making soup. James Peterson's book Splendid Soups offers a modified Paul Bocuse recipe for roasted pumpkin soup I'd always wanted to try. Sorry, didn't take any photos. (Also roasted the pumpkin seeds.)

ROFL! Our acorn squash went into my world-famous coconut-chicken-curry-squash soup. ;-)

Pumpkin & smoked gouda. Yum yum.
I also really like applewood smoked cheddar in pumpkin risotto. Yum yum.
29.Oct.2007 3.21pm
Um, did I post this in the right forum? You guys are making me hungry.
29.Oct.2007 8.17pm
uh, Don, It's just cosmetic surgery.
really. Recent testing shows that a good face improves vegetable self esteem.

Maybe there needs to be a recipe designing contest... result could be an eclectic Typophile cookbook.

MATT DESMOND'S ENTRY
Reposting Matt Desmond's entry so the image runs in the body of the thread. (Tip: use the "Insert Image" link below the "Comment" field when you create your post.)
1.Nov.2007 5.57am
Very cool Joe. But next time request a serif font. :)
1.Nov.2007 10.35am
Don, I only posted Matt Desmond's since he linked to an external URL. (Not trying to take credit for anybody's work!)
1.Nov.2007 11.10am
I also had the same idea of a 'boo face' but realized it differently. On the photo, I'm not yet digital, and sorry it's blurry. I could try again but it's going to be
pie shortly :)
1.Nov.2007 12.17pm
Nice. Send a pic of the pie too!

Sorry about my link earlier... the insert image link wasn't working for me.

Lance, that's pretty stunning.
2.Nov.2007 7.38am
I think Zara owes this thread a recipe.
2.Nov.2007 8.41am
(It's a gourd — hope that doesn't disqualify me.)
2.Nov.2007 5.13pm
Ehague, is that Hobo? Or just the shape of the pumpkin coming through.
2.Nov.2007 5.13pm
I don't know people... it's 5:30pm on Friday and I think Lance is going to take this one home for its technical merit. But, I think Bill Berkson's just might have the most appropriate design for the medium.
Of course, don't make me the definitive judge.
2.Nov.2007 6.15pm
SO - What if I include a recipe for roasted pumpkin seeds with Tamari sauce? :o)

Obviously its way too late to get in on this... but I just became a member yesterday and found this battle.
I take great pride in carving our pumpkins every year, and thought I'd share what I did this past October.
Enjoy!

Wicked fun carving there, Alicia. I got a good chuckle out of the spider in particular :-)

The skeleton was carved using only letters from Century Gothic typeface. The head is a C, the nose is a W the eyes are e's, ect.
29.Oct.2008 11.46am
How did you keep the counters of the e and o from falling out? Did you stick toothpicks or something?
29.Oct.2008 2.40pm
Gosh, Bill, don't you know Voodoo magic when you see it? :-)

Scariest Halloween Pumpkin Ever!
Last Halloween I created the Scariest Halloween Pumpkin Ever by re-interpreting the usage of your typical Halloween pumpkin.
I created the pumpkin insert!!
Got my buddies sign shop to cut some black vinyl and I put it on clear thin super flexible vivak. I then cut a display (tried to get a circus feel to it ...ahem) window opening in the pumpkin and slipped the insert in behind!!!
Now, anything can be said using the Halloween pumpkin as the 'delivery system'
