OpenType features on by default

Is there a way to specify that a calt feature be turned on by default in say, illustrator and indesign?

From the font? No way.
BTW: I think it is on by the default in InDesign but off in Illustrator.

Ahh, ok, just checking.

What if you put it in the liga-feature? This is on by default, and since it is raw code we are talking about here, I guess it could be possible to specify anything there, not just ligatures.

In general, in InDesign, you can set your defaults by choosing them when nothing is selected -- with a document open you're setting the document defaults, or you can choose OpenType features to be on by default in a no-documents-open state which will copy these defaults to all new documents. However, I would recommend a style-sheet based workflow. There is a related thread about OpenType features going today as well.

'calt' being off by default in Illustrator is a bug. It's on by default in InDesign and Photoshop - as recommended in the OpenType spec.

I wish Adobe would fix that bug. Any idea when this might happen, Thomas?

Let's just say that I leaned on it in the not too distant past. I was chagrinned to discover it hadn't been fixed in CS3.

Cheers,

Thanks for trying, Thomas. Too bad Adobe chose not to listen.
