Like the "@", the "&" is a character that I think has exceptional room to evolve (and you know I like "progressive" design). One of my favorites has to be the one in Triplex Italic. http://www.emigre.com/dp/getfontpage.php?PTriItL.html
I posted because: I am building a bonus font for Fountain, and the type is tall and strict, sans serif, all caps, quite rigid. And: I wanted to totally break it off with a swooschy out-of-place ampersand... The problem is that most nice-looking et-signs are very wide, and I want it to be very tall, but still decorative and classic, calligraphic. Thank you for all the links. Thanks Greg, here it is for others to see:
Hola, estos son mis mas nuevos ampersands. I hope you like them or make some good old usual copy/inspiration/critizicism/opinion or howevwr you want to call the forms. This is probably very nineties but it is mexican. Give feedback thank yous...
this is the first time i'm visiting this site. I am a talented graphic designer in NYC, and i'm totally crazy about typography. But lately this economy is really really getting to me. Once upon a time, getting a freelance job was nothing more than a phone call.... this days its like knocking on doors for weeks. I must say sometimes, i'm even thinking about changing my career all together. Please if anyone of you know of any designs firms that are hiring or need a great designer full time. Please post it on this board.... thanks Ciao _ania ;)

Look through the Typo-L archives for some good past discussions about ampersands, including some great sources.

Don't forget Classica Prestige! (ampersands on page two)
Also check out the ampersands in Luc[as] de Groot's Thesis family. There's a nice detailed animation of them at his site.
There was an old Font & Function with a good ampersand article. 1993 or 1994, maybe.

My own favorite ampersands: Trump Mediaeval italic, Cochin italic, and Michelangelo.
