>>> Type ID Pop Quiz V2.3 - Entry Level

Bald Condensed's picture

This is how it works:

  • A couple of words are published in the Type ID Pop Quiz, possibly -- but not necessarily -- providing a hint.
  • Try to identify the typeface. To win, you need to e-mail me both the correct name and weight. Do not reply in the thread itself to allow other enthusiasts to participate.
  • Show off your knowledge by casually mentioning additional trivia, like who designed it, when and by whom was it (first) published, and other cool stuff to impress your fellow Typophiles with.
  • Every week a new challenge will be posted.

In case of any disputes, I will act as judge, jury and avenging angel of wrath.

If you think this is too easy, maybe try the Intermediary Level Type ID Pop Quiz or Expert Level Type ID Pop Quiz.

Good luck everyone, and have fun. ;^)

With respectful thanks to the originator of this utterly useless but highly entertaining waste of time, the often imitated but never duplicated Cheshire Dave.

Time to reboot the Type ID Pop Quiz - Entry Level. New challenge. As usual, no replying within the thread, but e-mail me the solution through my profile.

Bald Condensed's picture

All right, looks like we're rolling! Correct answers so far:

Ties Linders | Michael Albright | Jan Erdmann (who thinks this one is not really a challenge, but hey, it does read "Entry Level" at the top ;^) | Eric Hague (yes indeed, this is exactly how it works, good one ;^) | Mili Carr | Tiffany Wardle | Craig Hughes | Stuart Marks | Marco de Meijer | Katju Aro | Frank Finnegan

Jan's picture

I didn’t mean to complain. Intermediate Level is just too hard for me.
Thanks for doing all this, Yves. It’s fun.

Bald Condensed's picture

Hey, complain all you want! :^P I don't mind. As long as we're having fun! ;^)

Really, I'm not bothered.

Miss Tiffany's picture

Hey I emailed you! Ok, well IM'd you.

Bald Condensed's picture

What does it say? "(...), but e-mail me the solution through my profile." :^P

Miss Tiffany's picture

:^P Ok Ok. I stand corrected.

Craig Hughes's picture

Any more fun for the noobs?

Linda Cunningham's picture

Yeah, Yves: you're not off watching the Tour de France, so how about posting a new challenge? ;-)

Digitalsabre's picture

So, any tips on how one would identify it? I want to become better at IDing fonts, so any hints would be great.

EDIT: Any hints on how, that is. /EDIT

Of course, it probably requires you own or have access to a slew of fonts so you should be able to already know it on sight...

This probably is way out of my league, even as Entry level.

Certainly, familiarity helps (you've got the font, you've seen it a lot and previously identified it, etc.), but using the tools at identifont.com and myfonts.com will make life easier. Other helpful sites are TypeNavigator at FontShop, Font Finder at linotype.com, and the extended question set at Fonts.com.

And then there's just looking at a lot of fonts. ;-)

Yes, indeed, this was Zuzana Licko's Triplex. Here's a new challenge, and it aint no coincidence I post this today. As usual, no replying within the thread, but e-mail me the solution through my profile.

Bald Condensed's picture

Correct answers so far:

Michael Albright | Sam Schlesinger | Craig Hughes | Kev Stone | Matthew A. Pemrich | Frank Finnegan (sorry Frank, somehow overlooked your e-mail :^/) | Derek Schusterbauer | Mili Carr | Jan Erdmann | Mandy Milks | James Mark Hatley | Tom Christensen | Katju Aro | Nate Mueller

Cute bit of trivia: the typeface name is the sound my three year old daughter makes when she waves her toy magic wand. :^)

Digitalsabre's picture

Frustrated. Waiting for result.

EDIT: Completed, listed. Still feel dumb.

Frank Finnegan's picture

…me too.

Hey see that font every where...on Blue Print, in Wholefoods. What happen to this thread it just ended?!

Bald Condensed's picture

Whoops, just lost track of it. New challenge coming up.

TomN-CA's picture

Is this stalled? Should someone come up with something to keep this going?

Bald Condensed's picture

Basically it's me that has to come up with something new, but I keep forgetting to add a new challenge due to pressing writing duties. My bad. :^/

Unless someone feels like posting a challenge?

Linda Cunningham's picture

If you're going to open it up to anyone to post a challenge, someone might just take you up on it..... ;-)

Bald Condensed's picture

Fling! You're a rabbit! ;^) Here's what Mili had to say:
"Stephen Coles' birthday wishes were written with Fling and alternatives.
Linotype has this information:
Fling was designed by Michael Gills in 1995. This richly ornamented typeface is based on the basic forms of the well-mannered scripts of the late 19th century. Intricate and generous capitals contrast with reserved, almost simple lower case letters and the upright figures give Fling a sophisticated, elegant look. The capitals can also be used as initials and the many ligatures and alternative letter forms offer a variety of design possibilities."

Just when you thought it'd never happen again, here's a new beginner's quiz. As usual, no replying within the thread, but e-mail me the solution through my profile.

Correct answers so far:

Jan Erdmann | Tom N | Mili Carr | Bram Pitoyo | Marten Fischer | Stéphane Darricau | André | Sam Schlesinger

This thread seriously needs updates. Bald Condensed, could you perhaps just announce all the correct answers so far, and then pass on the quiz-duty like in the other quizzes?

Thanks for starting this, even though I haven't had the faintest clue yet! :)

Malte

All quizzes will be rebooted this weekend, and this one will indeed use the same system as the other two.

Sorry about slacking, but August 1st will be the culmination of possibly the most radical change in my professional life.

maltelunden's picture

Woohoo! Thanks a lot Yves, for taking the time. And good luck on your mysterious change of life situation.
