New to Typophile? Accounts are free, and easy to set up.
I have a new client that needs a logo with a 'M' as the logo sign. He wants the M to later stand alone, or be used in combination with different keywords that describe his company. His business is as an event company on a very high level so the logo needs to be elegant and have class.
I have made these rough sketches for him and he likes it a lot. The only problem he has with the logo is that the M is not legible enough. I didn't want to use a font, tweak the M and make a logo out of it. So I hand lettered it to give it that exclusive touch.
I'd like to make some more complete logos for him, but I'm looking for some inspiration. Do you know of a logo that has a really really nice M as a sign? Some keywords that the logo should match up to are: serious, professional, masculine, elegant and powerfull.
Would be nice to see what you come up with...
Regards,
®ené

serious, professional, masculine, elegant and powerfull:
:^)

Hmm, I wouldn't call them any of those names.
Maybe try juvenile, simplistic, and lowest-common-denominator.
(Which, of course, means "effective" in this day and age....)

Maybe this chap has a logo... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_McGwire
Actually I like this 'M' but probably because I like the coffee...

I'm amazed no one mentioned McDonalds yet ;-)

Some time ago I've designed identity for joinery stores and the logo with M:

Aleksander, nice.
> masculine, elegant
Tough combo.
The Metropolitan Museum here uses a nice constructed "M":

I sure like the U. of Michigan's M
better than the awkwardly splayed and overseriffed one that the U. of Minnesota uses.

Aleksander, that's a great logo.

Quick trivia quiz: what's the font in Sharon's icon? :-)
hhp
8 Mar 2007 — 11:35am
I was hoping someone would wonder about that. :-)
8 Mar 2007 — 11:48am
Hint: check her last name.
hhp
8 Mar 2007 — 12:59pm
I don't think my last name is a hint.
8 Mar 2007 — 1:15pm
OK, after checking with Sharon: the hint stands, it's just more obtuse. :-)
Now, if you're suspecting that my original guess was
wrong... that's for me to know and for you to find out. :-)

Here's one Kral and I did way back when. I'm not sure if this is the final version but you get the idea.

Tyne and Wear Metro designed by Margaret Calvert.

I should suggest having a look at how Guimard dealt with the M of Métropolitain: the entrances to the Paris metro he designed are shaped as an M.
http://www.parisinconnu.com/guimard/l12p1.php
He also used different lettering to write Metropholitain
http://www.parisinconnu.com/guimard/l6p3.php
The Guimard escutcheons also bear an M
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Guimard_subway_escutcheons.jpg
(if you saw the entrance from a bird's view, you'd see it is also shaped as an M!)
Later letterings (white on red) by Dervaux may be less inspiring to some but I think they are great
both models actually

THe yellow 'radio mast' is rather good too:

If you are a comic buff, Edgar P Jacobs is the way forward:

Here's a good one. I'm really not even sure what its supposed to represent, but it sure works visually.

Yeah, I guess I see a flame/torch. I'm curious to know more though about the intended symbolism and meaning.
9 Mar 2007 — 9:32pm
Dustin, I guess it's saying "keep the flame alive".
History depends on people re-telling it I guess.
Fredrik, I've never done it, period.

Sorry for the late reply. I've been out for a few days. Work is piling up here and I'm drowning.
That's a stunning list of M's!!
D. I have been thinking about the Blake & Mortimer yellow M too. It's absolutely fantastic, but I can't copy it. Professional ethic... you know?
The logos 'Minisota Historical Society' and 'Mertz' is what I'm looking for. They are pretty unique and get burned in your mind.
THANX for the help. This really get's me on the way.
