Avatar Design Challenge

Dan Gayle's picture

Apparently we've had a silent battle between Satya and Nick Shinn over Avatar supremacy. Can we keep it up?

I think it deserves a time-wasting yet difficult challange:
Who can design their own avatar to perfectly mimic that of another person's? You gotta do it from scratch or if you do swipe parts, do it cleverly. (Which is the motto of design, no?) No cheating!

Categories are:
1) Most Difficult – Repeat the impossible
2) Quantity – How many can you do?

The winner gets to claim the title of "AVATAR MASTER".

Linda Cunningham's picture

Or AVATAR MISTRESS if the winner is of the distaff side?

I've always wanted to be Mistress of something. ;-)

Awwww, Chris, you promised to keep the good photos stashed away!

(At least you haven't dug out the ones with the whips and handcuffs yet....) :-)

silent battle between Satya and Nick Shinn

I made a couple of comments that his avatar is too big (the stipulation is 60 pixels square).
No battle.
It's cool that he's inverted mine.
I tried his out for me, but decided I'd stick with mine for several reasons, mostly the animation. I like the way when we're both posting that the colour cycling isn't sync'ed.

I’ve always wanted to be Mistress of something. ;-)

But Mistress Linda, thou art already the Separatrix Supreme of Typophile! ;-)

Linda Cunningham's picture

Separatrix? ROFL! Sounds like I should be leading the Parti Quebecois in the election....
;-)

pattyfab's picture

I'd like to propose a moratorium on animated gifs...

Linda Cunningham's picture

I'll second that emotion.

Kristina Drake's picture

> Separatrix? ROFL! Sounds like I should be leading the Parti Quebecois > in the election….

... Then we would have a real language police! ;)

Nick Shinn's picture

...a moratorium on animated gifs…

And I'd like to propose a moratorium on dull, static avatars...

Dan Gayle's picture

Nick's avatar was subtle. I didn't even notice the color change until one day I happened to have stared at one post for too long. Subtle is good. Myspace glittery, flashing text is not.

Linda Cunningham's picture

… Then we would have a real language police! ;)

And way more fun enforcement! ;-)

Tim

lore's picture

Whatever Tim! You have some nerve posting on this thread! Do you think you are better than anyone here? 3 years and not even a little monogram????
I think we should give Tim Daly an ultimatum. I had enough!:)

Better even:
=========================================================
AN AVATAR FOR TIM DALY Help UK avatarless people (contest)
Tim please provide brief (this year if possible)
Tim will pick the one he likes
You don't have to pay to participate ; )
=========================================================

lore's picture

Kristina you're next baby.

BTW, wasn't Marcel Duchamp who did that experiment with the pedestrian traffic light? He made the static little man green and the walking one red or something like that and observed people's confused reaction. The same is happening to me whit Satya and Nick's exchange of avatar. Weird.

ebensorkin's picture

Lore, perhaps you can have pity & make him one. Your work is so nice. Tim, do you accept? Maybe trying to make a match like that is too pushy. If so, - sorry.

What I cannot beleive is that nobody has mentioned Antiphrasis' icon

http://typophile.com/user/3247

To me - his is the best yet.

Linda Cunningham's picture

You don´t have to pay to participate ; )

Oh, crap, another fake contest.... ;-)

lore's picture

I ain't cheap though. I'm not sure Tim can afford me :)

dezcom's picture

Tim can't afford not to Lore:-P

ChrisL

Cool, I could be the target for venom and bile, I’d like it to reflect a concept I’m not going to tell you about, in my favourite colours which you can guess. I also reserve the right to close the competition at any time and with no appreciation for any hard work that has gone into it.

I ain’t cheap though. I’m not sure Tim can afford me :)

I’m a man of wealth and taste…
…actually you’re probably right:)

I thought I had a rather nice T made out of white squares on a grey background and many others copied me.

Truthfully I’m more anti-avatar/logo (I never buy clothing with the manufacturer’s name printed on it, ‘I bought the t-shirt for me, I don’t want to advertise your x*@!ing brand’),

I had thought about using this

Tim

Linda Cunningham's picture

That's really nice, Tim: drop it down to 60 x 60 pixels and you've got a winner. ;-)

dezcom's picture

That is a beaut!

ChrisL

lore's picture

Respect! A bit of dissent is always a good thing.
Well done Tim, it saved me a lot of work (and embarrasment)and it saved you a small fortune (arf arf arf)
Serious: it's lovely.

So how's the Satya x Nick score at the moment?

dezcom's picture

But Lore, what is this Avatar I just found on the floor near your desk? Is this what you were making for Tim? It looks strangely familiar. I guess that is the way the cookie crumbles :-)

ChrisL

ebensorkin's picture

Actually even a portion of Tim's piece would be good. Lore, I like your cookie too. What if after 60 seconds or so bit's of it started to be bitten off? Slowly....

timd's picture

Unfortunately the ambigram really doesn’t work at 60px. I might play with it to simplify it but my powerbook is having a new hard drive put in it by an Apple Genius so I don’t have access to the vector file. In the meantime a really, really zoom view :)

Tim

Linda Cunningham's picture

Utterly brilliant, Tim!

It's really two black rhinos making love on a night with the new moon, right? ;-)

timd's picture

Don’t get too close, Mrs Rhino’s husband is opening the door after a hard day on the veldt.

TECH TIP

To close crop your avatar on the grey Typophile background:

1. Duplicate layer in Photoshop
2. In top layer, use magic wand to select unwanted area. Delete this selection (its absence shows as "checkerboard" in the layers panel mini-view.)
3. Delete Background layer.

Save as PNG.

Dan Gayle's picture

HEEE's BAAACK! The one, the only,

!

ebensorkin's picture

Thanks Nick!

The morals of rhinos these days :)

They can't be much worse than some hu-mans out there....

CameronM's picture

Nick (or anyone who can help):

I've tried before to upload an avatar with a transparent background, and am still having problems, even with your instructions. The transparent area displays black. (plus I'm shy)

I've also tried RGB and Indexed colour spaces, but no difference (I'm a print guy, web is beyond me at the moment).

Marc C's picture

No no no !!!!

Linda and Kristina stay away from Le Partie Québécois ;)

Marc C's picture

If you want a transparent background, upload a gif and make sure there's no background in your avatar.

In my case, this thread might more aptly be named the Avatar Design Challenged. Yep. That's me. I generally use pictures of my kids as avatars, but figured that wouldn't be appropriate here. But if you insist....

(Adapted from an image on this page).

Kristina Drake's picture

Hehe. Thanks guys.

ChrisL you make me chuckle.

Nice, spire.

...You both did your homework to come up with those, I see. ;)

I will think of something. The pressure's on!

lore's picture

There you go: when Lore speaks, people obey. : )
Nick, consider it done.

Serious Kristina, what a cutie!

dezcom's picture

"...when Lore speaks, people obey."

I wish I had that same power Lore. When I speak, people just groan.

ChrisL

PS: Kristina, you have a lovely child.

Linda Cunningham's picture

He's rolling his eyes at Chris's bad puns, right?

(You're exposing a child that age to this place? Children's Services will come after you....) ;-)

satya's picture

Nick: "I like the way when we’re both posting that the colour cycling isn’t sync’ed."

Even I liked the way they were changing their colors.
even now.

What does it mean when people refer to themselves in the third person? :)

Tim

Linda Cunningham's picture

It means they're confused.... ;-)

andrew_baker's picture

I finally made a friggin avatar.

Thanks for the motivation, Dan.

satya's picture

its really a funny avatar, andrew.

Heh, just a lil sketch from the morning.

Glad it makes you smile. :)
