Hi. Does anybody know what font this is? If you need a larger image that can be arranged.
Crawls back under rock*
20 Jan 2004 — 5:01pm
PS.
Thank you in advance for even thinking about it. It isn't important.
20 Jan 2004 — 5:02pm
Lazybones
20 Jan 2004 — 5:05pm
On second thought...
20 Jan 2004 — 5:10pm
Huh. Perhaps a swash/alternate set from another font, or something related to Lazybones that never made it into digital form?
20 Jan 2004 — 5:14pm
Can I give you a bad vote if you are wrong?

That image is small, let me up a bigger one.

20 Jan 2004 — 5:20pm
Again, this isn't important, but if you know... let me know! The face was done before 1975 because that is when the record came out. That much I do know... Prolly not too many nerds older than me on here.
20 Jan 2004 — 5:21pm
No you may not. For merely the suggestion of giving me a bad vote, you are hereby grounded. Back under your rock!
On closer view, that is a bizarre little typeface -- obviously the creation of some Moog-generated-easy-listening stoner.
20 Jan 2004 — 5:24pm
Looks sort of bookman-ish... but heavier.
Mark Simonson, Mike Yanega or Grant Hutchinson will probably nail this one.
20 Jan 2004 — 5:29pm
I beat you to asking that question as well! :D
No, seriously, I did...
20 Jan 2004 — 5:29pm
What happens on a bad vote? Does the Typophile police come raid your house? I hope so.
Anyway, yeah the font rocks. Some major skills.
20 Jan 2004 — 5:35pm
I wasn't kidding about the age comment btw. Guess I am not that old, but guess Mark is the man for the job! We both live in St. Paul too. Imagine that.
20 Jan 2004 — 5:39pm
Typophile police? Do you mean the Gestypo?
Yves made me do it...
20 Jan 2004 — 5:49pm
Yeah. I had a stunt double there. If I fell, there is no telling what could do in public.
On a side note. That new Bram de Does book "Typographer and Type Designer" is a pretty nice book. Umm i mean its a snazzy book. (trying to appear older)
20 Jan 2004 — 5:52pm
Nevermind me. One of the main reasons I don't do boards is because I don't proofread what I write. And people can be mean on boards...
20 Jan 2004 — 5:54pm
> Mark Simonson, Mike Yanega or Grant Hutchinson will probably nail this one.
Oh crap... the pressure. The pressure!
20 Jan 2004 — 5:56pm
Nonsense! Nobody is mean on Typophile!
20 Jan 2004 — 5:59pm
Not since The Incident, anyway.
20 Jan 2004 — 6:00pm
Got it!
West Behemoth Clarendon Italic Swash from Photo-Lettering.
Scan to follow...
20 Jan 2004 — 6:09pm
Here you go Mike.

You better give those boys at House Industries a call for this one...
20 Jan 2004 — 6:11pm
Thank you Grant. Too kind of you!
20 Jan 2004 — 8:25pm
Sorry, I've been working on my website all day. This is what happens when I don't pay attention. :-)
Mike wrote me privately about this this evening before it was answered here. I found a font called Stymie Black Italic Flair that matches in some ways but not others. I concluded that it was probably a knock-off of something by P-L when I saw West Behemoth Ital in one of my P-L books. Then I check here and see that Grant's got the exact thing in one of his books (none of mine have it).
Well done, Grant.
21 Jan 2004 — 6:41am
As the 'other' ancient nerd, I missed out on this fun. It's interesting to see my name grouped with Grant & Mark. I'm flattered.
My P-L book doesn't seem to have this one, but I have a collection of old Expresiv Photo Lettering fonts that includes some 70's style 'gems' of a similar sort of flair: Swinger, Walnetto Casual, Palo Alto and Laurent. If you give me a few minutes I'll post samples of them.
21 Jan 2004 — 7:14am
> That has to be one of the better typeface names I've heard.
Those Photo-Lettering designers were on something, to be sure. The typeface names go very well within the various type categories that my book is divided into as well.
21 Jan 2004 — 7:20am
As promised, here are the samples, with some more from that same collection (published by Tiger Direct about 1994). You will note that some of the '70's stuff was perhaps 90 years old at the time, but you know how everything old can be new again. Too bad it doesn't work for old nerds...

21 Jan 2004 — 7:22am
That has to be one of the better typeface names I've heard.
That's a typical Photo-Lettering name. The names they assigned were almost like the Latin names for plants and animals. They often tell the name of the designer and other facts. "West" actually refers to the designer in this case. (The P-L book I have, Alphabet Thesaurus Volume 2, lists the non-swash version as Dave West Behemoth Clarendon Italic 11.)
Here are some others:
Tommy Thompson Colonial Triple Condensed 3
Tommy Thompson American Colonial Extra Condensed 5
Fiedler Baroque Monogothic 6
Alexey Brodovitch Albro
Ziptop Latin Bold Condensed
Benguiat Interlock Medium Condensed
Rosenblum Mishoogas
Rosenblum Poppycock
Rosenblum Razzamataz
Jamaica Rum Open
Crenshaw Outlaw Bold Expanded
Benguiat Zenedipity
Haupt Casoni Bold 8
Tony Stan Cheltony
Sill Animated Cheltenham
Pete Dom Husky Bold

> Sorry, I've been working on my website all day.

By the way, nice work on the Pangrammer Helper, Mark. Very slick. Your excuse for being late to the discussion is quite acceptable.
21 Jan 2004 — 7:48am
Thanks. I did it in REALbasic at first. But then I realized it would be just as easy to do in Flash, and better because I could put it right on the site.
21 Jan 2004 — 7:50am
Thanks Mike! As an aside, while I don't mind looking at you
at all, why does your pic get to be bigger than everyone
else's? Is it an indication of your expertise? ;)
Maybe it's in deference to my poor vision at my advanced age? (I followed instructions about image size, I thought.)
21 Jan 2004 — 11:21am
Ahh good stuff, made me laugh.
Nice postings Mike. I am familiar with most of those. This one Photo-Lettering face is awesome, you just have to have their catalog to ever see the dang thing! I usually can find faces pretty fast if I don't know what it is.
Thanks everyone for all your help!
20 Jan 2004 — 5:22pm
Wikkid face!

P.S. No bad votes on my watch or ya get booted!
20 Jan 2004 — 5:25pm
Welcome Mike! Very purdy sample.
Prolly not too many nerds older than me on here.
Was that sarcasm? There are many nerds older than you on
Typophile. This one looks like a job for Mark Simonson.
Hopefully he'll crawl out from under his rock and help out.
20 Jan 2004 — 5:26pm
Adriano beat me to Identifying the Identifier.
What are you doing up, Yves!? It's late in Belgiumland.
20 Jan 2004 — 5:37pm
> What are you doing up, Yves!? It's late in Belgiumland.
Yup, just as late as in Sweden, ya smartass!
I'm in big doodoo with my work, none of it is my fault,
and still I'm the stoopid one who stays behind to
finish the job when everybody else has left for home.
It's been like this since January 5th and I'm getting
pretty exhausted.
20 Jan 2004 — 5:40pm
Cina - Unless you sent a stunt double to TypeCon03 I can
say from personal experience that you are a young buck.
We've got Gerald Giampas here for heck's sake!
