Countdown to TypeCon2006!
Now that you can register, I think we need a thread dedicated to: Who is going? When are you arriving? When are you leaving? Where are you staying? and for some, Who needs a roomie?
I’m arriving on the 7th and going home on the 14th. I’m staying at the Hyatt, the official conference hotel.
Only 48 Days until the T-Party begins!!

22.Jun.2006 4.06pm
I am arriving at 10am on the 8th. Leaving a week after the conference is over. Staying with family on Mass Ave.
22.Jun.2006 4.16pm
JLT and I will be there for the duration. I think it’s safe to say you all know in which room the party’s at.
22.Jun.2006 5.25pm
I arrive Tuesday the 8th at suppertime, leave Sunday night and am staying at the Hyatt. I’m really looking foward to this!
22.Jun.2006 5.28pm
I am arriving on the 9th just in time for Thomas and Adam’s workshop and leaving Monday morning—staying at the conference hotel as well. William Berkson is sharing a room with me.
ChrisL
22.Jun.2006 6.12pm
Chris and I will focus on the stuff really important to the over 60 crowd.
That means for the late night party come one come all—to Stephen’s room.
We’ll be asleep :)
23.Jun.2006 9.16am
I plan to be there August 11-13, and I am looking for a roommate! I live in New Haven, Connecticut. Anyone interested in rooming with me? :)

23.Jun.2006 10.38am
> We’ll be asleep :)
Gee, then...
could I drop by when it’s my senior nap time? ;-)
I’ll bring prune juice and Fig Newtons!
23.Jun.2006 11.34am
I will be arriving the 7th and leaving the 14th and staying at the Hyatt. Now that Stephen has proclaimed his room the “party room”, I may have to challenge him to a duel. Oh, we shall see where the real party at.
23.Jun.2006 12.43pm
Damn, I have to work, you fellow-freaks, annual report season’s a-comin’.
23.Jun.2006 6.15pm
Prune juice is welcomed Norbert but you will have to park your walker outside.
ChrisL
23.Jun.2006 6.55pm
you guys are scaring me! : )
24.Jun.2006 7.39am
We are too old to be scarry :-)
ChrisL
26.Jun.2006 8.20pm
How shall we meet up? The only person I met last year was Yves but am very excited about meeting/chatting with others.
27.Jun.2006 12.21am
Pasting our Typophile icons on our conference badges might be a good start.
27.Jun.2006 5.44am
Last year I didn’t know a soul. When I walked into the conference hotel bar and saw a bunch of folks wearing typographic T-shirts, it all became cleartype to me :-)
ChrisL
27.Jun.2006 5.55am
> Pasting our Typophile icons on our conference badges
I started using my Typophile avatar on my personal business card late last year. It’s funny that some people I’ve met for the first time now recognize the icon before they read my name.
Just goes to show you how widely this forum is visited.
27.Jun.2006 6.22am
”...some people I’ve met for the first time now recognize the icon before they read my name....”
Would they be named Harpo? :-)
ChrisL
27.Jun.2006 7.27am
Oh sweet, good idea, Stephen.
27.Jun.2006 8.26am
David, didn’t we meet? Perhaps I’ve confused some people. Who was handing out the cute little buttons in the bar?
27.Jun.2006 9.03am
I think I met Tamye and Shu, but it was a bit overwhelming and I was only a volunteer last year. I probably checked all your badges at the auditorium at least once, heh. I did also help Rob Keller setup his Ceramic Type exhibit.
27.Jun.2006 10.52am
Yeah! Thanks again David, you were a big help. Hopefully I will be there this year, maybe with some new art type stuff.
rk
27.Jun.2006 11.57am
This year I get to enjoy the conference to mingle with and meet new people!
27.Jun.2006 12.34pm
David, You might meet some OLD people too—like me and Norbert :-)
ChrisL
4.Jul.2006 8.37pm
Just thought I’d bump this thread to the top of the forum, while letting the crowds know that I’m booked into the Hyatt as well. Arriving on the 9th, leaving (surely with a tear in my eye) on the 14th. Can’t wait to meet up with everyone again...
Chris, you’re not that old.
5.Jul.2006 5.11am
“Chris, you’re not that old.”
Thanks Grant, but why then does the AARP have me on speed-dial? :-)
ChrisL
5.Jul.2006 9.05am
I’m down for meeting new AND old people!
6.Jul.2006 4.15pm

Thanks Tamye!

7.Jul.2006 8.25am
Tamye,
When I go to the typecon page, the only clickable object I see is for the Hilton. I can’t get to the registration page or anywhere else. I tried to send an e-mail to info@typesociety.org and it was returned as undeliverable. I don’t know if you aware of these problems, so I decided to post here. Anyone else having issues?
Thanks,
Kristin
7.Jul.2006 8.41am
Kristin,
I had no problem. It may be you have an older version of the page cached in your browser. Try this link:

7.Jul.2006 9.10am
Kristin! Are you coming this year!!??
7.Jul.2006 1.46pm
I’m coming, Tiff. And it’s on the Bullseye! Woo-hoo!
Chris,
Thanks for the advice, but I have already registered. I’m just worried that other folks may have the same problem. And the e-mail thing is a bummer, too.
Kristin
7.Jul.2006 1.50pm
Yey!!!!
7.Jul.2006 7.14pm
Kristin, I’m so glad to hear that you’re coming this year!
We were aware of the problem with some browsers retaining old versions of the site in their cache. Emptying the cache or force reloading the page makes the problem go away - at least, that’s what we’ve heard.
As for the email bouncing... all I can say is that we do have intermittent problems with both incoming and outgoing email. My number is buried in the contact area of the SOTA site - if you ever need me, give me a call.
If you could try forwarding that bounced email with the headers intact, I will show it to our provider so he can investigate.
See you soon!
7.Jul.2006 7.15pm
Just a reminder - TypeCon2006 early registration ends tonight, and some of the workshops are full or dangerously close. Now is the best time to register to get the lowest price and the workshops of your dreams!
19.Jul.2006 5.15pm
BUMP
Tamye’s more right than ever; I waited to register and the workshops I wanted are full! Register quick, even though the main program isn’t posted in detail yet....
20.Jul.2006 2.13am
You should always listen to me, Carl... Seriously ;)
20.Jul.2006 8.37am
Huh what? Did you say something Tamye?
; D
20.Jul.2006 8.46am
Carl,
You should know that the last person that refused to listen to Tamye was found at the bottom of San Francisco Bay with two Ludlow machines for shoes!

Tiff just posted about our new fundraiser at TypeCon. All those lovely items you’ve been saving for an auction can now be donated to the Curiosity Cabinet in the TypeCon marketplace. Proceeds benefit SOTA’s educational activities.

Full details on each session will be posted shortly.

24.Jul.2006 1.10pm
i would like to recommend to anyone with an interest in classical art that they visit the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. It is, imho, one of the most underrated museums in the country, and the building is spectacular - a sort of Italianate Victorian / Moorish / English A&C castle on the edge of downtown, very near the fine art museum and almost next door to MassArt. They also have a great cafe, one of the better museum gift shops anywhere, and a beautiful courtyard. I’ll certainly be going, and would happily take long anyone else who wishes to visit. The T goes right there, too, I believe.

I look forward to seeing lots of Typophile regulars there!

24.Jul.2006 6.10pm
T: And do we get the pleasure of hanging out with Miranda?
JLT: I might let you take me to this place. If they have an air conditioner, they are my friend.
30.Jul.2006 7.53pm
It’s just 10 day’s ’til TypeCon...
I’m going to Boston Saturday - I can’t wait to get there and see everyone.
There is a great lobby bar/lounge area at the Hyatt where we could join up for cocktails... anyone up for meeting there on Monday evening to get the party started early?
31.Jul.2006 11.48am
I’ll be there Tuesday evening.
31.Jul.2006 12.18pm
Carl, there’ll be a bunch of us in the bar on Tuesday night, too...
31.Jul.2006 1.58pm
”...there’ll be a bunch of us in the bar “
Sounds like a familiar pattern :-)

1.Aug.2006 6.59pm
A welcome pattern...
1.Aug.2006 7.25pm
Woop woop, I’ll be driving home to MA on Wednesday and staying with my Aunt and Uncle in the North End for the duration of the conference, just a short walk from the hotel. I’m not doing any of the workshops, but I’ll be keeping a sharp eye out for your avatars on your name badges....need to mingle!
1.Aug.2006 7.50pm
or type tshirts, right? or typographic tattoos? or type jackets... or... or.. typographic haircuts... or... (you get the idea, right?!)
1.Aug.2006 8.03pm
I’ll just walk around without a shirt on and I’ll be sure to get SOME KIND of conversation about the ambigram on my back, haha.

Tour and Play at Firefly Press | FREE!
Visit one of the finest letterpress printing offices operating today. Firefly Press, in operation since 1978, is an entirely letterpress operation, doing true letterpress only - printing directly from metal type that they set in-house. Firefly follows the philosophy, not just the mannerisms, of such Boston-area printers as D. B. Updike, Bruce Rogers, W.A. Dwiggins, and Rudolph
Ruzicka. Firefly projects include small books and brochures, broadsides and certificates, invitations, announcements, and stationery. They didn’t set out to be a museum - it just happened that way. They print on a Vandercook proof press and a Chandler & Price Craftsman platen press, and have two
Linotype machines, two Monotype composition casters and a Monotype
display type caster, and about 250 cases of type for hand setting. A typecaster will be operational for this visit, and attendees can print their own keepsake on the Vandercook!

Anybody know what building the Typecon workshops happen in over at Mass Art?
7.Aug.2006 12.10pm
Not sure Eben. Wish I could just head home right now!
7.Aug.2006 1.14pm
Say....
Will anybody from Type Radio be at TypeCon? Wishful thinking - I know. Seems like they would more likeley be in Portugal at Atypi instead; it being closer to home for them...
Thanks David! I take it that’s your home institution?
7.Aug.2006 1.26pm
I’m from Plymouth, about 40 miles south of the city. Taking off from Philly where I’m at for college on Wed and will be joining everyone on Thursday at the conference. Luckily my aunt and uncle live in the North End, just a short walk away from the Hyatt.
8.Aug.2006 12.18am
Eben, if you find out what building the workshops are in let me know. I’m also not sure.
Also, does anyone know where at Harvard Paul Shaw’s tour will start Wednesday?
8.Aug.2006 5.39am
According to the MassArt web site, all the graphic design facilities are in the Tower building on Huntington Ave. If you don’t know the area, it’s the big tall building on the corner of Huntington Avenue and Evans Way, a block or two past the Museum of Fine Arts:
Google map satellite view
Hopefully we’ll find a helpful table of TypeCon volunteers in the lobby!
8.Aug.2006 8.06am
Thanks for the information. It’s reassuring to know that it’s all in one building.
8.Aug.2006 1.20pm
And don’t forget to post some pictures somewhere!

Emails went out to everyone who registered about the workshop venue, check-in times/days at the Hyatt, etc. If you didn’t get the email, please let me know by sending an email to info at typesociey.org. Check the website for the most current info - http://www.typecon.com, and the blog at http://www.typecon.com/talk
Workshops are in the Darth Vader-esque Tower Building at MassArt, 621 Huntington, Boston. Instructions on taking the T from the Hyatt are on the TypeCon site and in the email that went out. Enter through the main Tower entrance, go up the first flight of stairs, and there will be TypeCon volunteers waiting to check you in and direct you to the workshops!
Sadly, no Type Radio folks will be in Boston, but they’ll be at TypeCon next year (venue announcement happens Friday! I’ll give a nice little prize to the first person who posts the TypeCon2007 venue on Typophile).
9.Aug.2006 3.50pm

That wouldn’t be very sporting, Joshua... there are at least two dozen people who *could* post right now, but won’t ;)
Allow me to rephrase - I’ll give a prize to the first person who posts about the 2007 venue AFTER the reveal Friday afternoon during TypeCon. Let’s say the first post after 6pm Eastern Time on Friday, August 11. SOTA board members and their cohorts are not eligible.

Thank you SOTA for sponsoring the “Type & Design Education Forum” that I moderated today.
I got the OK to expand the “Typographic Education” section on Typophile and post some of the PDFs presented by educators Audrey Bennett, Laura Franz, John Sherman, John McMillan, and Gillian Mothersill, plus consolidate web site and resource links referenced during the sessions.
Special thanks to James Craig, Ilene Strizver and Mark Jamra for their insightful and typographically stimulating presentations.
Personal thanks to Andi Emery and JP for assisting during sessions.
Folks got to see my face today without the red “Groucho” disguise ;-)
