list of typophile designers

pattyfab's picture

Is there a list anywhere on this site (typowiki?) of which active typophiles are also type designers - and their web sites? It would be good to know both as a reference point and in order to patronize their sites and buy their fonts.

You could set up a wiki yourself and ask the people to fill it out themselves. Perhaps you should post a message under 'general discussions'.

many of the designers in the designers page of the wiki are active typophile patrons. But just off the top of my head:
David Berlow
Alejandro Paul
Stuart Sandler
Richard Kegler
James Grieshaber
Stefan Hattenbach
Mark Simonson
Nick Shinn
Jim Rimmer
Gerald Giampa
Hrant Papazian

Thanks Paul. Yeah, I went to the Designers page of the Wiki but there was no distinction btw typophiles and, say, Herb Lubalin. I don't know anything about Wiki but if I find a free minute maybe I'll try to set this up. I'm assuming I (or someone else) could add to it as we go along.

I've also seen Magnus Rakeng here, and (if I'm not mistaken) Jonathan Hoefler. And I know Dav(id) Hubner has designed some fonts.

My problem is I'm completely hopeless at the html as anybody who's seen my lazy ID posts would know.

typophile type designers

the hard thing is who do we include/exclude? Do we just include regulars like Mark, or do we include everyone who's ever posted even if only once or twice? do we only list prolific type designers (like i did above) or do we include the dabblers?

pattyfab's picture

Yeah, that's a good question. I'd probably restrict it to people who have fonts licensed and for sale either at their own sites or at Fontshop, Myfonts, Veer, etc.

Maybe we start with the typophile regulars.

Nick Shinn's picture

But shouldn't we be advertising?

hrant's picture

> I’ve also seen Magnus Rakeng here ...

Then there's the Lurking Army of the Busy & Famous.

> who do we include/exclude?

Are there enough of us to exclude anybody? If you must, I guess you could only include people who have ever been on the prolific posters list (which you could hopefully automate). Or you could restrict it to paying members, to motivate membership*. As for exclusions on the type design end, that's certainly a can of worms...

* How's that going, btw? :-)

> But shouldn’t we be advertising?

You mean formally? :->

hrant's picture

Anyway, if it's a fully open wiki, forget about exclusions,
all you can do is edit for formal accuracy. Like when one
of us dies, you remove the name.

paul d hunt's picture

so any living designer who has ever posted on typophile is our criteria? i don't think that anyone necessarily needs to be excluded, but for this list to be helpful, it should have some qualifications. No?

Nick Shinn's picture

You mean formally?

Right, paying cash money for a banner ad.
But it's not a very effective medium for font sales.

hrant's picture

> qualifications

Paul, what about:
1) Has sold a font.
2) Has been on the prolific posters list and/or is a member.
3) Is alive.

Although I do see some room to move on #2.

I originated this post following a very nice email exchange with Stefan Hattenbach during which I realized I had no idea he had designed some beautiful fonts. I guess my motivation was for my own information - to know who among the people who frequent this site are actually type designers and what they've done. I'm a graphic designer and do buy fonts for jobs and would like to patronize Typophiles when appropriate. This is a 'community' after all, and reading another thread (http://typophile.com/node/19846) in which Rory expresses frustration trying to communicate with foundries it occurred to me he might find a more supportive group here - and perhaps end up buying a font.

It also gives some perspective on their contributions to the threads. I think the wiki when complete might stimulate some sales - at least from me.

But that said, I don't think the criteria need to be too rigid. Let's hope nobody dies any time soon...

Miss Tiffany's picture

I don't think #2 is necessary. For instance. I don't think Mr. Berlow has been on that list yet, but he certainly has contributed in a very valuable way.

hrant's picture

Well, I think #2 needs help, but something does need to be there.
And really, the problem with the prolific posters list is that it's based
on number of posts, not number of bytes (with quality of posts being
sadly too utopian a potential measure).

What if we made the "participation" benchmark having started a thread?
For one thing it's easy to check: you go the tracker in the profile, and check
for his name in the Author column.

hhp

pattyfab's picture

I'd say if we limit it to members at least that they don't have to be prolific posters, especially since that only seems to track the last 10 days.

fontplayer's picture

I have seen Peter Bruhn of Fountain logged in, but not sure if he participates. Graham Meade of Typotheticals is sometimes here, although until he starts charging more he will probably have a stigma.

Eric Spiekerman and Christian Schwartz certainly qualify as well as Hoefler.

ChrisL

You can now add Dan Reynolds since his font just got posted to MyFonts today. Certainly Paul should put his own name on the list too!

Here is Dan's link on MyFonts:

> Eric Spiekerman and Christian Schwartz certainly qualify

I like both of them, both personally and professionally,
but I think Christian is a good example of somebody
who doesn't participate enough to make the cut.

dezcom's picture

I guess I am more likely to be inclusive rather than exclusive.

James Montalbano has got to be ok though.

ChrisL

hrant's picture

Oh yeah.
He's even advertised! :->

Miguel Sousa's picture

Just removed my name from the list, as I don't qualify.
There are no "fonts commercially available" designed by me... yet! :^D
Thanks anyway.

And added Jean Francois Porchez. If I remember correctly, he used to be quite active around here.

Why weren't Hrant and Mark already up there?

Thomas will soon join the list :^)

Edit: Just remembered Eric Olson, who for some odd reason does not have a wiki entry yet (and neither was in the general list of designer) :^/ BTW, I guess Fleurons Of Hope™ will make a lot of people qualify... from the top of my head, Tiffany (aka Miss Tiffany) :^P

Nick Shinn's picture

Jenkins?
After all these years, I didn't need to know that.

dezcom's picture

If "Fleurons of Hope qualifies" then so do I, but frankly, I think the rule should be an entire font, not just a couple of glyphs so I don't think I should qualify (at least until I get my butt moving and get my EULA written and post my first font).

ChrisL

dezcom's picture

Karsten just posted his site and should be on the list as well.

If I can't get in with my Font Aid I contribution does a dingbat font count? How's that for desperation?

Now if that won't work, perhaps like Chris, I will just have to finish one of my designs.

George Horton's picture

I think there are some celebrity lurkers too.

Thomas Phinney's picture

Miguel, do you mean "soon" in terms of geological time scales?

I just want to have it done in time for CS3. Hmmm, maybe I'll go back to working on that final sigma now. Stupid hook. arrrrh.

Hope London is treating you well,

Everyone is holding his breath for your upcoming Hypatia Sans, Thomas (which I believe it's going to be the first geometric in the Adobe Originals catalog.

All's well in this side of the pond, thanks! :^)

While I would like to be on this list I haven't posted comments for a few weeks. My work is at http://www.woodentypefonts.com and on myfonts at http://www.myfonts.com/foundry/woodentypefonts/ I am certainly not the most prolific poster on this site - got better things to do like look after my family, etc. But I do like to check in regularly.

Two proposed additions to this old-ish thread; I know I could just go ahead and edit the wiki, but since there seem to be disagreement on who is “enough active” to make it to the list I though to post here:

Cheers.

Christopher Slye's picture

Hey, can I be on the list? I even got on the cover of da Rollin' Stone.

Another Font Bureau font that I want...

Me. I may as well put myself on here.

Gee Christopher, you look way better in your magazine photo than in the one in your avatar. :)
