Does anyone own this book? (The Encyclopedia of Fonts)
My mom wants to buy me this book: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/184403206X/104-6474327-8695950?v=glance... and I was wondering if anyone here has this. It seems like a good investment, as I have no font specimen books. Choosing a typeface would probably be a lot less daunting and more intuitive if I had a book like this. Thoughts?

I saw it just the other day. I’d say save the money and wait for the next Font Book release.

Ok thanks, sounds like a plan, Tiff! When is that expected to be released?

Excellent question. Maybe Stephen can help us with this one.

Or the two Indie Fonts volumes.
Tiff: What non-Latin stuff does “Encyclopedia” include?

I thought of that after I hit the Post button, oh well. Hopefully he’ll pop in and let us know. I’m definitely willing to wait.
Or the two Indie Fonts volumes.
I’ll have to invest in this once I get the paycheck from my most recent client as I don’t have the cash for it right now. Thanks for the info, everyone!
EDIT: Oh what the heck, I’m buying the two Indie Font volumes now. Paul or Hrant, can you list the typefaces I’ll get on the CD-ROMs? or point me to a list?

I have to say I didn’t notice any non-Latin.
Indie Fonts are special and do not try to be an encyclopedia.

Good choice. The Indie Fonts books are a great addition to any Typohile’s library. The added bonus of being introduced to the newer foundries on the scene.

to tell you the truth, many of these are readily available for free download if you visit the foundries’ websites, fyi.
and you’re welcome ;^D

Yep, I noticed that after some perusing. But faces such as Mark’s ’Mostra’ and some others are not free! I’ll just wait and put the complete set on my computer when I recieve the books/discs rather than try to hunt down all the free ones from the foundries listed above.

An important feature of a good book to choose some types of fonts from is that they have a sample of the face set at book sizes, say 10 on 14 point to a decent measure, so you can evaluate them at a working size before buying. I can’t recommend a particular book although I have some 80’s Monotype folders that have this (and more).

New FontBook is scheduled for April. Yes, I can hear the murmuring now. I’ve given estimates before. But I know it’s close. I’ve actually seen final pages.

I know, nothing like bumping an ancient thread, but I recently got Indie Fonts 1 & 2 and am loving them. What wonderful inspiration and glorious glyphs!
2.Mar.2008 12.51pm
I even got the Indie Fonts 3 (in addition to 1 and 2), some nice fonts there, too!

I will get Indie Fonts 3 eventually. Can only buy such books as the finances allow! (Surprisingly, it’s rather costly to heat one’s home in a Canadian winter such as we’re having this year in Manitoba...)
