Fontlab Ltd. announces the release of FontLab Studio 5 for Mac OS X.
Following the release of FontLab Studio 5 for Windows in September 2005, Fontlab Ltd. now announces the availability of the next-generation professional font editor for Mac OS X. As a major upgrade of its predecessor FontLab 4.6, FontLab Studio 5 is a comprehensive solution for font foundries, professional type designers, typographers and graphic design studios, allowing them to design type, create, manipulate and modify fonts. FontLab Studio 5 supports all major outline font formats, including Type 1, TrueType, Multiple Master and OpenType.
“The major focus of this release has been put on in-context type design,” said Yuri Yarmola, Vice President R&D at Fontlab Ltd. and the application’s principal engineer. “Our new metrics and kerning editing environment adds a second dimension to the process of letterspacing by allowing the type designer to see the glyphs not only in a horizontal string but on a true two-dimensional page. The new neighbor and shape groups layers add another dimension to the process of glyph design by dynamically previewing related characters right in the glyph editing window.”
According to Yarmola, practically every aspect of the application has been revised. “It was the users who shaped the development of the application. More than 90% of the changes in FontLab Studio 5 are based directly on customer feedback,” says Yarmola. The highlights of FontLab Studio 5 also include:
-> new improved proofing and printing,
-> improved Bézier drawing tools,
-> integrated autotracing (formerly only available in ScanFont, a separate product),
-> improved font merging and blending,
-> better OpenType and Unicode support,
-> better autohinting,
-> improved Python scripting support
As well as hundreds of other improvements. FontLab Studio 5 retails at US$649.00 with attractive upgrade pricing available to users of previous versions as well as of Fontographer and TypeTool, the company’s other font editors. Visit the FontLab Studio 5 page at http://www.fontlab.com/studio/ for more details.

Chris,
I’m on a PC so I could’ve had FL5 a while ago, but I don’t have much talent for type design (yet), so I’m sticking with TypeTool. Your typefaces look really great, but you know that already. :-)

Thanks Lauri!

Chris, I have great news! I found a way to cut your hotel costs. I just asked my wife ... You can stay as long as you like in her atelier in our back garden.
Oh ... and Dan, if you wished for a(ny) car ... would you seriously want a VW Passat?
17.Jul.2008 11.20am
Well, it is too big for my needs now. But I think it is the best European family car on the road, certainly. I guess if I were to get one now, it would only be because I’d be planning ahead. But I’m not and I’m not, so…
17.Jul.2008 11.34am
Just kidding Dan. I’ve had two VW’s for a company car for about 7 years and I liked driving them and use them as a family car in the weekend.

Wow. Fontlab or Passat?
I did have a Nissan Sentra 97, awesome little car. I come all the way down from Albany to Orlando fully loaded at a 100 miles average (1400 miles). My cat was having the biggest fun of his life.
The VW Passat is the best buy for a family guy. Expensive buy but in the long run it is the best. Now, I sold out the Nissan 2 years ago and got myself on a VW New Beattle, it is ... lead color (silver) and it is a biggest fun on the highway, quick, smart and if you want to make a party, its got the best monsoon sound system, which I use very loud, mostly Opera!
As for Fontlab, I waited and waited and waited until I got a second hand copy of Fog ( Macromedia Studio : 30 bucks ).
Lovin it !
Cheers
André

André,
I used to blast “Don Carlo” or “Tosca” full blast out of my old Sentra until someone stole my CD player from it.

Jos,
Thank your wife for me! I am nowhere near close to having enough for airfare so I won’t be able to take you up on your generous offer.

Chris, sorry for that sire. If you still get the radio in the car, the one that takes K7s, you could get a cheap external CD players with a K7 adapter and bingo : Turandot ( Nessum Dorma ) Music to your Bs (ears ). That is what I had in the Sentra.

Thank’s André! The radio is gone too and the window was smashed in to boot. I figured parking an old beat-up car at a Metro station was safe but they passed up the nice BMW next to me and picked on my car. Drug addicts just have no taste these days! They did get my favorite Boheme recording, also with Pavoratti.
Thanks for the link!
