I have looked everywhere for the name of the font GM used on the Special Edition Trans Ams from 1976 to 1981. Does anyone have a clue?

It was probably custom drawn, not a font. But here are two blackletters that are similar:

Gotharda
Honda (how’s that for irony?)

That’s really close!

I just read about the creation of Gotharda, and it turns out the guy was looking for that old German look. That’s just what GM called that style they used, old German. There must be an exact match out there somewhere!

Easiset way to confirm this would be to find other GM material - advertising, manuals etc., which set other words in the same typeface.

It’s Element. Maybe ever-so-slightly redrawn.

Just don’t ask me to identify Breitkopf at 50 paces :-)

Thanks Peter. Got a sample of Element handy?

As usual, this car badge would seem to be a custom creation. Still, Peter’s suggestion of Element is the closest I know of. Check out Gerhard Helzel’s digitization of Element Fett (Mar Bitroff, 1933), five font samples down.

What is wrong with this link? They won’t download the pictures of the fonts!

Herr Helzel is one person who has digitized an incredible number of fonts as one of his interests. He’s not a foundry. As such, his website is kind of bare bones. He does, however, show you every capital letter Element through V of - making it clear that it is quite close.

If anyone cares, here is an old example of Element in use.

Oh, and that should have read Max Bittrof. I butchered his name above.

Wow, MIke and Peter, the M and N are exact in the sample of Element you sent. I’ll keep trying to check out Gerhard Helzel’s digitization of Element Fett, but as of last night it would just keep saying it was downloading but never did. You guys rock!
