Hi,
I´m trying to find a modern sans serif, same style with Din Mittelschrift or Interstate. Open, reliable, convincing but friendly, for both body text and Headlines. Din M. is OK but a bit worn-out. Any Ideas?

Flama
Pill Gothic

Veering a bit, but still versatile, straight-sided sans with large families:

Apex Sans is similar.

You can’t buy it at myfonts, though. Seems to be sold at

http://www.vllg.com/Thirstype/ApexSans/Example+About/

a rather frustrating site to navigate.

I wouldn’t say frustrating. Just different from MyFonts, with which many are more familiar. Village’s site lets you get to many showings more quickly, and the sampler is interactive - see the results as you type.

Psy/Ops has a whole bunch of those, and all of them very interesting interpretations of the straight-sided tech model to boot.

We certainly mustn’t forget Matt Desmond’s Variable nor Mark von Bronkhorst’s ubiquitous ITC Conduit.

Then there’s the quite peculiar Subalde from Subtitude’s Valérie Desrochers.

You might like Tomas Brousil’s Fishmonger or Thomas Mettendorf’s Metroflex type systems.

Ok, wow. I guess I have to retract my statement. MyFonts now has “live” sampling.

You could try Chevin, along the lines of Din, but straight-sided, rounded, more refined, suitable for all sizes and friendly.

I see shades of DIN in Facit, which I’m really loving.

I couldn’t get Village to give me a showing. Maybe it’s my browser.

Argh, how could I forget Chevin indeed! Good call, Nick.

What are you using, on which platform?

I am using many browsers and platforms - OS 9 and X, Mozilla, Explorer, Safari. No PC/Windows. I’m not sure what I had open that time, but I couldn’t see the fonts which is why I put that other link on there. No biggie.

On another note, do you think we’ll ever get back to the days when the jpeg appeared directly in the thread, not requiring a link? That was so nice.... and I still think the font is too big in the original post. Looks like it’s for the visually impaired which we will all be if we keep staring at fonts online.

Can I ask a fundamental question. Why not use Din or Interstate?

I think his point was those fonts are overused and he wants a similar feel but in a less ubiquitous font. As this list shows there is no shortage of Din-alikes to choose from.

Exactly. Why use DIN or Interstate if the rest of the world and their dog are already using it? Why blend in if you can stand out?

PTL Notes, designed by Ole Schäfer is a nice substitute voor Din. It’s available at http://www.primetype.com

Exactly, just because I have used them a lot and would like to find something new. There´s nothing wrong with Din or Interstate, I love them both but I see them too much everywhere.

I´m very grateful for your help, thank you VERY much! I´ll have to check those fonts recommended. BTW, I forgot to mention I´m using a mac. I don´t know if it matters...

Heh, yeah...

I have checked all the suggested fonts and I´m amazed! Some of them are so similar with Din and all of them are very interesting. I´m starting to think some fonts I have seen in use must have been something else but Din...

Thanks a lot, I´m grateful!
