The standardization of OpenType has application beyond MPEG but the press releases focus on that area...

That's fantastic! Not having read the releases in full: are both CFF and TTF flavours covered?

Yes, the ISO verison will cover everything in 1.4.

Oops, I didn't notice this thread starting, and began my own on the same topic over in General Discussions, where I figured more people would see it: http://typophile.com/node/14606
Si, when you say the ISO version will cover everything in 1.4, does that include the appendices. I've never been very clear about whether the appendices, including the layout feature tags and descriptions, were considered normative or informative. Some seem obviously informative, e.g. the WGL4 character set and the 'TrueType fundamentals' appendix. But others seem at least quasi-normative unless one takes the view that OpenType Layout is an implementation of the spec rather than part of the format (which seems a legitimate view: I'm just not sure how MS and Adobe view OTL).

The decsion on what will be in the ISO version of the spec and what will be externally referenced is still being worked out. Tags and WGL4 will likely be maintained by MS and linked from the ISO spec.

One other common question is what will happen to the OpenType specs posted on microsoft.com/typography and Adobe.com dev section? We will continue to keep the spec posted and updated on microsoft.com/typography, and we expect Adobe to stay in sync.

The process of standardizing OpenType as an ISO standard (Open Font Format) continues with the commencement of the official balloting process.
