What should I pair with Gill?

manard's picture

Hello,
I'm making a little color book for an exhibition. It will be a little 'grounge', with halftoned background images, and so on. and I chose Gill Bold for titles, Gill regular uppercase for subtitles. Now, what do you suggest for the text? I'd like Mrs Eaves, but if anyone turns up with other alternatives...

thank you very much
max

Joanna>

Pilgrim

When did Pilgrim arrive?

Linotype England first released it for the Linotype Machine during the 1950s. I'm not sure of their work process with Gill (who died in 1940).

I don't know when it was digitized, but I'm thinking tthat wwe've been selling it for years and years.

My guess is that we don't promote it because it just has two weights at the moment.

I'd go for Joanna - by far his best book face.

I'd second Joanna. I love Perpetua, but it really needs to be letterpressed to look right.

Massimo, I re-wrote your title for you. I felt it needed a teensy bit more clarification for the masses.

When did Pilgrim arrive?

I think a whole slew of em arrived in September of 1620. ;^P

Yeah, the lines over here needed help getting justified I guess.

anything but sheep, please.

I'd also go with Joanna, though I do love Perpetua as well.

i think the sheep joke needs to be retired. i'd be willing to bet that within any thread directly related to Gill it has snuck into it.

5th or 6th on Joanna.

well he'll always be remembered for his excellent type... and his "expirements"

I was serious! I'm from Plymouth, MA. I just go to school in Philly!

Yeah, I wandered to this site and I joined just so I could post something here.

I agree that Joanna and Perpetua make good companion faces for Gill, but they are clichés now. They are always used together and it is boring.

I am not sure what to suggest with Gill because I never use it, but I will try some things out and make a more encouraging post next time!

Rock 'n' Roll!

instead of Gill and Joanna, try Bliss and Whitman, Kent Lew says "The combination is reminiscent of [Gill + Joanna], but (to my eye) much less idiosyncratic, more readable."

gah! make that Bliss and Whitman...

Men, the talent of this guy Tankard is awesome!!
A specimen of his reminds me of some Emigre's faces. Dalliance?
Democratica?

I tried a few faces last night with Gill and I think Caecillia or Serifa would go really well with it. But something that looked really contrasty with Gill and good at the smaller sizes is the Warnock. Have a go at those.

Gill and Joanna? well yes, if you want to cement a piece of design into the 1930's, but for a 'grounge' exhibition catalogue?
