For many years QuarkXPress (commonly referred to as simply Quark) was the dominant page-layout application, overtaking Aldus PageMaker (subsequently Adobe PageMaker) in the early 1990s. Recently, QuarkXPress was overtaken in popularity among designers by Adobe InDesign, and is slowly upgrading to mount a challenge to that application.
