I think of Max Caflisch. There’s also André Baldinger, Markus Ernst, Ch. Bircher, Daniel Lanz, Edouard Hoffmann. A lot of swiss typographers are featured on www.fontnest.net.

Everyone that Chris L said for sure, and in addition to that since graphic designers are being mentioned, Armin Hofmann, Niklaus Troxler, and although I am not a big fan, Büro Destruct.

Isn’t April Greiman an American? Didn’t she go to school at CalArts?

Yes as far as I know April Greiman is American. I think she may have just studied in Switzerland at the Schule für Gestaltung Basel (Basel School of Design) under Weingart. Though I could be wrong, it wouldn’t be the first time.

Some of my favorites:

Cornel Windlin (Tate etc), Nico Schweizer (ID)

April Greiman is American and did some study under Weingart. He now, or at least did call her a type criminal(ist) when I studied in his class room.

Also interesting to see that at least two of the names mentioned, Laurenz Brunner and Markus Ernst, did a work practice at Dalton Maag before releasing their typographic work.

April Greiman is an American who also went to Basel in the early 70s where she met and married the late Dan Friedman (a classmate of mine at CMU). Her typography was very Basel influenced even though she was annointed with the “New Wave” label by the design press. When I took classes with Weigart in the mid eighties, he spoke of April fondly and referred to her as a “Painterly typgrapher” .
