Agree. Some details look a bit off like top serifs angle, weight, x-height... The Herald Tribune could easily use a (slightly) custom(ized) version of Chaltenham...

I assure you that it is some version of Cheltenham.

Yes it is surely a custom Cheltenham, the _g_ is very similar but with these little differences.

I've found it i think, it seems to be the NYT Cheltenham customed by Carter & Cone : http://fontsinuse.com/typefaces/7802/nyt-cheltenham
