1959 was in the middle of the era of photo-distortion of fonts -- thinner, wider, lighter, heavier etc. -- many of which do not exist in modern digital versions. The basic design for these letter-forms is found in some 19th century wood-type Grotesk's, and in fonts such as British Inserat http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/itfmecanorma/british-inserat/ and Fred Lambert's Compacta of 1963
