This is a typographic logo / flyer for Lux, an upscale coffeehouse in Phoenix, Arizona.
It was printed on a 5.25 x 5.25 cmyk / bw water and tear resistant matte laminated stock.

typeface used is slightly modified Beta by Joshua Distler (shiftype)

Hello Marcox. Well there is a story behind this.
Back in 1998 I created this logo in a horizontal and vertical format for the a cafe called Lux in
the hip part of Seattle called Belltown. There was a neon sign as well as vinyl window sign fabricated. This establishment was sold in 2000 to a couple who sold again a year later, but kept he logo and brought it back to Phoenix, Arizona when they sold the Seattle location. I reprinted the businesscards and this promo with the new address on it in december 2001. I have not ever been to Phoenix or seen the new location, so I find it interesting that someone in the typophile community drives by there all the time. thanks for the info. Ole

The owners Felicia and Daniel purchased a cafe usy streets in in the hip part of Seattle called Belltown a few years ago. The cafe already had the logo you see above in a horizontal format in Neon signage. The

Ole, FYI:
I've been in Phoenix three or four times (twice for the Formula-1 race they used to have there), and my most vivid memory is how many churches per capita they have.

When I heard that you have to apply for a drinking license a month in advance to have a beer in SLC, I canceled my Winter Olympics trip (just when Armenia needed a third person for their two-man bobsled team, no less).

The logo is based on a flourescent ligthing fixture a customer gave to the Lux several years before I started going there. Since the tubes were all the same length the "x" is approx the same length diagonally as the "u" is in height.

Ole,

I think the first image is beautiful and would
lure me into a coffee shop no matter my lack
of taste for the drink.

Too bad it wasn't called Larry Potter's Coffee.
The fun thing about 'L's and 'P's: put them
together and you have a coffee cup...

.... LP ....

Hrant,

"When I heard that you have to apply for a
drinking license a month in advance to have a
beer in SLC..."

Um, while ludicrous and hilarious, the SLC
liquor laws don't require this at all. Funny
how the urban legends spread when the truth
is nearly as remarkable (like the KFC story).

Please forgive me. Very little of this post is
topical or useful. I retreat back to lurk mode.

Err, it now occurs to me that Hrant's jab at
SLC was in jest. I feel dumb. Who was it that
said the thing about not opening your mouth
and removing doubt about your stupidity?

Which font is used on 'NOW OPEN'?
I like it!

Ole, I'm afraid this logo doesn't work in context. I live in Phoenix and drive past Lux several times a week. As seen from the road, the bottom bar of the "L" closes up the top of the "u," and the name reads as "Lox."

Great coffee, though, and the owners are really nice folks.

Ole, thanks for the background info. I'll try to take a shot of the sign and post it for you.

Sigh! :) Thanks a lot Ole!
Do you guys know of any other fonts that has the similar kind of feel that this one has?
Im thinking especially of a font Paul Postma did as their corporate font for Koweiden Postma assosiates. The font was called 'KP Din'. I doubt it's ever released as a font to buy.
