WW2 Cartography typeface

Corbeau77's picture

I'm not sure whether the lower case and upper case show here are the same font. If there are two, if anyone can help identify both it would be much appreciated.

I'm looking at it and thinking I should know what it is, but for the life of me I'm not too sure at all.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Very "DeVinne". The closest here might be Romana.

Thanks very much. It also shares some similarities with Rundfunk Antiqua

The maps may have been prepared by the Leipzig publisher Justus Perthes Verlag, which used Leipzig versions of Romana for many years. For a discussion of the relationship between DeVinne and Romana see

Thank you very much Don, that's superb. The first link doesn't seem to work unfortunately.

That sounds like a very feasible suggestion. If I can just tweak the K on Romana I think it'd be a close enough approximation
