Bye bye Typophile!

Andreas Stötzner's picture

Devastatingly lame.
Repeatedly disfunctional.
No working image functionality.
The Convention room littered with loads of ID dirt.

No one responding.

Well, it was a great time.
I miss it.
Thanks and bye bye.

Salute!
A. Stötzner.

Images do work. You just have to use a different browser.

Ramiro Espinoza's picture

Move to TypeDrawers.

bojev's picture

Typophile has become really slow and unreliable as of late - tried Firefox,Chrome and Safari - it is slow to load on all three and sometimes I get error message saying Typophile is off-line - I would think Punchcut would do better since they are a web ourfit. Not ready to give up yet but Typophile is failing

JamesM's picture

The site is virtually unusable. I actually made the "top posters" list with just 6 posts in 10 days.

And the last official post to Typophile's Twitter account with an update to the situation (blaming spammers in China) was made 7 weeks ago.

I'm think Punchcut just wants to let it die.

It is a shame if all the wits and thoughts of – 10 years? should get lost. I hope someone thinks about preserving at least some of the contents.
The last great conversation I was glad to participate was that of “the greek end user”. Really amazing.
Thank you Tatiana :)

The use of a different browser only addresses the issue of not being able to post images; I'm sorry if this was not clear.

5star's picture

And it's a shame that there isn't anyone from Punchcut (or whomever owns/controls this site) with enough honesty/guts to tell the Typophile membership what exactly is going on.

And what is their game plan going forward.

Complete disrespect...

Ramiro Espinoza's picture

I agree that it would be a pity to lose such great repository of debate and knowledge. The databases should be preserved and eventually ported to an usable website.

donshottype's picture

I have really enjoyed Typophile but the slowness and Russian roulette experience of making a post -- did it work, no, should I try again, damn it duplicate posts -- is so frustrating.
So what other forums would be better.
What other options might be good.

Unfortunately there is no true alternative yet. TypeDrawers is a good forum, but it is not meant as a Typophile replacement, since it has a much narrower focus with restrictions concerning content and things like user names. Typedia could have become a vivid typography forum but they closed the forum in 2011. All other typography forums I know of are just sub-forums of design forums. No other (English) site has a similar focus as Typophile.
Based on my experience with running a vivid German typography forum since 2001, I plan to set up an English copy early 2014. It will be a full-fledged community site with all the bells and whistles one would expect from such a site nowadays. So there is hope. :-)

Still, I am also hoping that all the Typophile discussions will someday be “freed” from the current software and moved somewhere where they can at least be browsed without problems as an archive.

donshottype's picture

Thanks Ralf for the helpful explanation. Look forward to your English language project. For the time being there seems to little alternative but to make do with Typophile, with all its technical imperfections.

As far as I'm concerned this website is becoming intolerable and it is almost unusable.

I have sent emails to tech support re: "Service Temporarily Unavailable" and various other spurious server error messages - all to no avail. Not even the courtesy to respond.

I am more than willing to contribute to the Typophile forums - if only the server didn't pull the plug on me after a couple of minutes. It has got so bad that the server has been not accepting my password at log in and when I request another the system just freezes, or I get multiple reset links in my inbox. Aaaarrrrrggggggh! from a very annoyed occasional (when it lets me in) user.

This service is frankly outrageous and laying the blame on the "Chinese Hackers" has gone way past a joke. Yeah -right. Please fix it or put it out of it's misery!

P.S. Just so you realise that I do know what I'm talking about regarding support, let me state:- In association with my business partner (cyclone systems.co.uk) we supply internet web hosting services via our www.cylonet.com site with guaranteed 24x7x365 server support service included. If we supplied a service that was marginally as poor this one is - we would be out of the game!

quadibloc's picture

Having been unable to log in for the last week, I certainly can't claim things have been fixed, even though before that week, it was working a little.

JamesM's picture

Perhaps someone who knows Jared at Punchcut can convince him it's time to either get the site back in working order, or turn it over to someone else.

JamesM's picture

Also, perhaps Typophiles might want to send their own messages to Jared (Typophile's founder) explaining how they feel.

I doubt he reads his Typophile mail anymore, but he has personal accounts on Twitter, LinkedIn, and perhaps other social media too. I won't post addresses, but just search for Jared Benson Typophile Punchcut.

I'm NOT advocating hassling him, we appreciate all he's done over the years, but just sending civil messages explaining how we feel about Typophile's dismal condition and asking that he either fix it or let someone else run it.

Bert Vanderveen's picture

Classic situation of EOL. Time to move on to greener pastures. Really a shame, because this used to be one of my fave stops on the web.
In two and a half weeks I will start my round the world tour (two weeks plus in Australia, starting with Sydney, then on to San Francisco and New York), and considering the attention needed to plan that, and the dearth of web access while en route, I won't log in here until the end of January. Except for some tips on what to visit in the places mentioned, of course : )
BTW any tips are appreciated. Mail me at bert (at) bertvanderveen (dot) nl

See you...

Hello Typophile!

Seems like we're back in biz!

I just finished cleaning up some stray spammers ...if you see anymore please let us know.

JamesM's picture

> Seems like we're back in biz!

Indeed, the site seems to be much better!

dezcom's picture

Here is hoping Jared will archive Typophile in some way, perhaps on a searchable CD-DVD. I would buy a copy.

Thomas Phinney's picture

I tweeted my frustration recently. I agree that TypeDrawers isn't a full substitute, but this was so bad, it felt like a passive-aggressive plot to push people to leave Typophile!

dezcom's picture

Maybe Sisyphus got tired pushing that giant rock up the hill?

donshottype's picture

For the last couple of days service is good. But is this just a temporary remission or a permanent recovery? Some "this is your captain speaking" messages to the passengers would help when we are going to hit rough spots on our journey.
Don

bojev's picture

Still seems good after several more days - keep fingers crossed

desktop's picture

The board was incredibly slow to load about a week ago, but now it seems a lot faster.

JamesM's picture

The site improved dramatically a week or so after I suggested here that folks contact Jared directly via social media. Don't know if there was a connection or if it was just coincidence.

desktop's picture

Is Jared like Comcast?

quadibloc's picture

Comcast is a company. Jared is an individual.

desktop's picture

It was a joke.

Bert Vanderveen's picture

Re what I wrote a week or so ago — it is a really improved experience now and I renege on my promise.

JamesM's picture

Whatever the reason for the improvement, folks might want to let Jared Benson know we're pleased that the site is running better.

Doghouse's picture

Ye Gods,
Do I detect a little improvement with the site?
Has someone finally blown the bugs of the bumper, or is it just an illusion?
How long will it last?
Anyhow - for now - A BIG THANK YOU!

donshottype's picture

So far the recovery remains strong.
Much more fun to use Typophile now.
Don

dezcom's picture

Thank you, dear Jared, for all your work!

Has anyone considered starting up a StackOverflow forum for fonts shop talk?

As a noob to type design, and as someone who only dabbles once or twice a year in typography creation/design, I find that it's nearly impossible to find good resource online when I have questions.

With that said, I think a stack exchange type forum would be awesome.

Here's the place to start:

http://area51.stackexchange.com/

When I search for "typography", only the graphic design site comes up.

Anyone around here think Typography would be a good idea for a stack site?

mhulse's picture

Although, it sounds like this forum is running better. Sorry, I skipped those posts towards the end of this thread.

One thing to note, the search isn't working for me. I'm hoping I won't be scorned for asking a noob question that's already been touched on. :D

donshottype's picture

As for searching, try Googling the word typophile and a subject.
Not perfect, but I find it gives more relevant recent results than typophile's own search function.

James Puckett has banned me from creating an account on Typedrawers.
I believe the same holds true, still, for Hrant P.

Actually it's worked out great being forced to remain just a fly on the wall with the impulse to contribute squelched.
Puckett can go fly a kite. And my standards are too high to post on a forum that would have me as a participant, anyway. ;)

I've been posting on the Google Fonts Discussion Group.
And I've revived my blog Readableweb after over a year of inactivity.
And, for the first time since getting involved with the actual production of fonts, I'm making some money doing it.
Perhaps there's a correlation with not being able to post on Typedrawers. If I shut up entirely, I might really make a bundle.

BTW - I haven't looked, but I'm assuming the Wayback machine site keeps copies of this site.
A possible source in case this forum completely bites the dust.

I am very glad to see Typophile working again. Most of what I know about typography today is due to this forum and their participants. Thank you very much.

russellm's picture

What Igor said... Well, "much of what I know..." but still. Feels reassuring.
