Futura 'u' as alternate 'n'?

redpushbuttons's picture

I am working on a logo(type), I'm using Futura Medium for this, all lower case.

The name has a 'u' and an 'n', so during sketching I tried to rotate the 'u' 180 degrees and use that as an 'n', less clutter because the 'n' has this slightly 'ascending' stem on the left while the 'u' is like an upper case 'U'.

Now this looks good imo, only thing... since there's also an 'a' in the name, the 'a' would be the only character left with a slightly 'descending' and 'ascending' stem (right).

Is this weird? being inconsistant?

I mean the original font seems to be inconsistent too because the 'u' looks like an upper case 'U' still I'm not sure if I can leave the 'a' as is.

I hope I'm clear lol, can't post the logotype.

Thanks.

Follow through the modifications like this?

Thanks,

Yeah I tried that solution but imo the 'a' starts to look like an 'o' with the type I use... Futura Medium Condensed... I left that out in the original post sorry.

What is REALLY WEIRD is being inconsistent about the spelling of “inconsistent”…

If you want the "a" (like John's) to be less like an "o" you give it a hard top-right. Or you could make the "a" from a "u" rotated 90 degrees clockwise, then close the right side with a stem.

BTW:
- An "n" made from a flipped "u" will appear slightly narrower than the "u" (optical illusion) so you probably want to compensate for that.
- Make sure you don't end up too close to this:

- What are the other letters in the name? Is there an "e"?

lol!

Thanks,
Will look into these options tomorrow.

BTW, editing of posts is going away much sooner now, so:
If you rotate the "u" 90 degrees you'll have to adjust the weight distribution (and the proportions).

Thanks Hrant,

I get all nervous when you talk about compensating for optical illusions, you do that all the time :)
I really need to learn to meditate not calculate.

The original 'u' seems wider than the original 'n' as well, would this be called bad design? (they are the same width)

Ok, I guess I'm better off not butchering Futura and stick with the original characters or look for a face which has the characteristics I was trying to force upon Futura.

Thanks guys.

There are butchers, then there are surgeons.
There's nothing wrong with modifying Futura - don't be too nervous! :-)
