CheapProFonts - Newsletter 09-02

Half of the releases this time are fonts made by Levente Halmos - a designer from Hungary, and a welcome newcomer to the CheapProFonts stable. The font industry sees more and more new type designers coming from eastern Europe, but surprisingly few of them actually cater for their own home markets by including all the necessary glyphs... CheapProFonts to the rescue! ;)

In this news release I present the following 9 fonts:
- 5 from Levente Halmos
- 2 from Kimberly Geswein
- 1 from Brian Kent
- 1 from myself! ;)

Hubert Jocham releases Yuri

Yuri, the baroque perl
The new typeface family from Hubert Jocham

The Renaissance is one of the most important periods for typedesign. For the serif typefaces followed the so called transitional period and goes on to the neoclassicism. So you get the impression the forms, kind of, morphed from oldstyle to neoclassic. And in a way it rally did. In Germany the type of the transitional period is called Barock-Antiqua. This term is not very good because Barock-Antiquas we know are fare from the overwhelming ornaments of Baroque architecture. But in cultural history the changes never happen like a morph from one form to another. The transitional history is very rich with the vast variety of design directions from all over europe and of course from Holland.

Apple Poem

In Summer 2009 the KORT project 'Eetbaar landschap' (Edible Landscape) takes place at the Moerenburg terrain in Tilburg, the Netherlands. The project is coordinated by Ester van de Wiel. Talking with her, the idea was born to make a poem built out of apples. The text was written by the Dutch writer Nick Swarth:
Ik ben door mijn dagelijks maal geroerd, / ik ben geroerd door mijn eten. / Mijn lichaam benut de energie om haar / cellen uit te wonen. Van die parasitaire / toeren, dat moet een mens wel roeren.
I've been stirred by my daily meal, / I've been stirred by my food. / My body uses the energy / to ruin its cells. Such parasitic feats / infer they're bound to make you stir.

IHOF releases the Caffe Family

For Immediate Release
Buffalo, NY- June 1st, 2009

P22 and the International House of Fonts announce Caffe- a new flavorful
font designed by Gabor Kothay.

Caffe was originally designed for the Artz Gallery Cafe in Budapest
Hungary. The design is a contemporary handwriting style adapted from
examples in lettering exercise books. It has been redrawn and expanded into
six styles. The four weights were created by drawing the style using
different mediums: Cappuccino in pen, Pastry in felt-tip, Lemonade in brush
and Tobacco, the original, in pencil. Poster and Poster Inline are well
suited for display purposes and round out the family. This font family is
perfect for bistro menus or other European-flavored poster & print design.

From 6 to 10 July up to twelve people can enroll in the Department of Typography at Reading, to extend their design skills and knowledge in typeface design. We will provide near-constant access to the core teachers on the MA programme (Gerry Leonidas, Fiona Ross, and Gerard Unger) in a structured schedule. Additional sessions will be held with Paul Luna, Dan Rhatigan, and Rob Waller.

I’m proud to anounce the first release of a vfb QuickLook Plugin for MacOSX Leopard. This is the long-missing thumbnail and preview generator for FontLab Studio document files. Now the .vfb files are real citizens in MacOSX.
