Fayon – a high performance Didot for text

OurType Fayon is a practical result of Peter Mohr's daring study of Didot style printing types, and his attempts to discover exactly how they emerged into the world of typography. Peter's theoretical body of work is published in Zum Ursprung Klassizistischer Antiquaschriften, Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst, Leipzig, July 2009.

New website for OurType

For Immediate Release

De Pinte, Belgium - April 22, 2010

OurType is proud to announce its brand new website – a fresh and dynamic re-imagining of the original online home of the independent type foundry.

Darjeeling combines British Elegance and Indian Flavor. It is flared like Optima, with a scent of Bodoni. By layering “Regular” and “Ornaments” over each other you will create astounding pieces of colorful typography. Additionally there is “Regnaments” which combines the two other styles.

Darjeeling is great as a display font, but also perfectly legible at text sizes. Use the ornaments only to add spice to Your design.

Make sure to use applications supporting all these lavish OpenType features like small caps, various sets of figures, fractals and the 102 discretionary ligatures.

Darjeeling has been recently released at myfonts:

Typefaces and textual information in general, despite their crucial importance to our culture and development, are often neglected when it comes to visual communication and graphic design. This problem is particularly acute in the Central European, post-communist environment. TypeTalks is a collaborative activity designed to raise awareness of the power of typeface design and typography among both graphic design professionals and students.

Our one-day symposium will take place in Brno, Czech Republic in the House of the Lords of Kunštát on 21 June 2010 at 10:12.

Custom Type | Karmina Display

This display version of Karmina Regular was developed for a particular client with a specific set of requirements in mind. The client is using the full Karmina family for all their communication materials and needed a version for large size applications, as big as billboards. They liked the sturdiness and low contrast of Karmina and didn't want to loose those features too much in the display version. After several presentations and more extreme variants, we nailed the design. The contrast is rather low for a display version, but the overall feel of the typeface is elegant, slim and yet sturdy enough. Both parties are very happy with the result and we look forward to see some applications.

The Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA) is now accepting programming proposals for its twelfth annual conference. TypeCon2010 will be held August 17-22, in Los Angeles. We are partnering with many local and international organizations in presenting TypeCon2010, and look forward to offering a variety of affordable programming designed for type makers and type users from all walks of life.

We are currently reviewing proposals for contemporary and historical presentations and panel discussions, focused hands-on workshops in both the digital and non-digital realms, and a variety of programming for the Type and Design Education Forum and other special events.

Topics at TypeCon cover a broad range of interests, including typography, type design, font production, graphic design, new media, printing history, calligraphy and hand lettering, the book arts, advertising, type in motion, literacy, type sales and marketing, legal issues, type and design education, and other related areas.

WOBURN, Mass., April 7, 2010 – Monotype Imaging Holdings Inc., (Nasdaq: TYPE), a leading global provider of text imaging solutions, has released the 20-font Neue Frutiger® Condensed family, the latest addition to the Linotype® Library of typefaces. Designed by Akira Kobayashi, type director at Linotype GmbH, Monotype Imaging’s German-based subsidiary, and Adrian Frutiger, creator of the original Frutiger design, the new family builds on one of the best selling Linotype offerings of all time.

The new fonts can be previewed and licensed from Monotype Imaging’s e-commerce sites: www.fonts.com, www.linotype.com, www.itcfonts.com and www.faces.co.uk.

Ryan Ogborn, a 2nd year design student at Seattle Central Community College, took to a shooting gallery to "design" an experimental font for a thesis project in his experimental typography class this quarter. He claims it is inspired by the font, Bernhardt Medium and Sarah Palin. He used each letter for target practice and recorded the "hits" and collected this data on a poster of all 26 letters. He also included one added glyph of a winking emoticon in his poster (which got zero hits). See a video of some of the action here. http://letterology.blogspot.com/2010/03/going-rogue.html

Sand Serif, an elaborate video created with sand on top of a light table in a darkened room, is the work of two multi-cultural and multi-talented 2nd year design students at Seattle Central Community College. Mykhaylo Sinenko, originally from the Ukraine and Priyanka Basu from India, edited over 7 hours of video and to create this beautifully choreographed work. It is a stunning piece and a marvel to watch. http://letterology.blogspot.com/2010/03/xtype-show-redux.html

The month of April marks the 2nd Annual Student xType Culture Show at Seattle Central Community College's Hunter Art Gallery. This show features the work of 48 students creating 26 letters of experiments in typography. See fonts which are illustrated, animated, baked, bleached, and even blighted with bullets. The rules of play were to construct an experimental display font of 26 letters out of any media (with the exception of flammable, toxic or xRated, but this edict was even ignored), and they were bound only by time, money, materials and their imagination.

Hello all,

I'm very pleased to say that I have produced a new art print.

The print is called 'Blazing' and is available exclusively from Pictures on Walls.
POW is a big gallery selling the work of some extremely talented and established artists including Banksy and Antony Micallef, so I think it's a very positive development.

It's an ambigram, which means you can read it both ways up. Details here:
