Credit only where credit is due. Yes, I did name that TV show after my affliction (which, by the way, is incurable, but not lethal), but I did not come up with “Kern up the volume”. My name for that roadshow was “Spinal Type”, but then my colleagues at the ISTD got scared in case some big movie company came after us. I didn’t share that fear (having survived numerous attacks by Harvey Hunt, Hollywood laywers don’t frighten me), but was persuaded to drop it. ISTD council came up with the Kern title – not sure whether Freda Sack, Jonathan Dorney or any of the other members want to take personal credit.

“Farewell, Etaoin Shrdlu” was played at ATypI in 1999’s film festival, so I know it exists on VHS. We purchased it then from someone in N.J. who owns rights but I can’t remember anything else about it.

Good luck — that IMDB hadn’t listed it tells me you’re in serious trouble. Even one of my favourite movies (O Lucky Man) hasn’t made it to DVD, although I’d kill for a copy. (I do have the soundtrack on vinyl....)

Hilarious typo!!!!

I went nosing a bit farther to find information about the film, and came upon a page from Penn State’s Library. (http://www.libraries.psu.edu/admin/colloquia/foreman.htm)

The second paragraph begins, “To introduce the film, Foreman, who worked in the newspaper business for 41 years holding positions such as coyeditor for the New York Times . . .”

Does anybody know if Farewell, Etaoin Shrdlu was ever ported over to DVD? (Or even VHS for that matter.) I just checked Amazon and it didn’t come up. A movie I have always wanted to see.

I think the sound of mats being distributed back into the magazine is right up there with the most beautiful music the world has ever known!
