Reviewed by Jesùs de Francisco: Evolutive was an alternative magazine produced in Barcelona by the people behind Vasava Artworks, one of the most innovative design studios in Spain. When they decided to end the project they enrolled guests and friends one last time to contribute work in the same spirit that guided Evolutive, 'the wish to go a little further than we went yesterday.' The result is Evophat, a collection of design, photography, fashion, music, type, illustration, from people like Base, Mike Cina, Leila Mendez, Büro Destruct, Jordi Bernado, Gunnar Knechtel, Typerware, Jørg Richter, and many more.      Its virtue, eclecticism. Its downfall, inconsistency. A very valuable effort nonetheless.

Reviewed by Randy Jones: This book is maybe 35% introduction to letterforms and commentary on typefaces, 50% logos that Young has designed over the years, plus some other odds and ends. The "fonts" portion is well done with very nice visuals, although someone who's been around letters extensively won't find enough depth here. Characters are discussed both by groupings (branches, lowercase bowles) and individually where appropriate (lower case g). The "logos" portion gives interesting insight into the way Young works, giving the detials of his process. Insightful for those who get started by firing up the computer and selecting a font.

Reviewed by Miles Newlyn: A fantastic book with many nuggets of knowledge that I've not found elsewhere. While some of the logo examples look dated now, the craft and it's explanation behind them is sound and relavant. It has a great section on the construction of script types. Although 'Out of Print', it's relatively easy to find in design book shops.

Veteran designer Scher draws from over three decades of design experience to provide readers with a firsthand account of the creative process, that is, advancing good ideas and personal vision within the corporate cultures and organizational dynamics that are predisposed to resist them. A focus on the collaboration necessary to bring design ideas to life sets this book apart from others in the genre. In addition to an interior packed with familiar work, the book's cover and jacket provide visual stopping power that supports the author's approach. Unfortunately, the book itself won't stand up well to heavy use. Though this work is mainly about the design profession, it will appeal to anyone working in a creative field, whether he or she is attempting to advance creative ideas or to chart a career trajectory concerned with personal growth and development. Best suited for larger public libraries or libraries with extensive liberal arts, fine arts, or business sections.

Reviewed by Paulus: I bought this book because I was working on a CID and although I think we are currently moving away from these 'Single-Logo' branding ideas, this book was really resourceful and helped a lot to get my head around the subject. A good buy for any sound graphic design library.

Reviewed by P.Shecter R.G.D.: Per Mollerup [from the cover] has created a fantastic volume on trademarks, wordmarks and logos. If you own the Elements of Typographic Style, then this book should sit right next to it on your book shelf. Mollerup includes a comprehensive taxonomy on logotypes and logograms. There are some great tidbits on the creation of different marks. And he discusses how culture plays a key role in the adaption of marks world wide.

Reviewed by Margaret McCullough: This book is not only a visual treat for the eyes but also brain food for the creative intellect. I originally purchased this book as an accompaniment to a course I took on the history of mark making. Unlike many books bought for academic use, this one has remained above my desk, significant for a book designer. It takes the reader through the origin and evolution of trademarks as well as some lovely tidbits about their creation and individual transformations over the years. Any dryness in the copy is more than made up for by this books elegance and format. A must have for any designer.

Unfortunatetly,Semiotics and Semantics are overlooked in the today's Identity Projects. Not taught in today's classroom.      Another strength of this book. It strives to accurately Identify the Original Creators of the Identity Design. If this book has a weakness. It is because it was not continued as a series.

Reviewed by Roballoo: All facets of Mirko's career are covered here from illustrations in his native Bosnia from the late 70's to page layouts for the new York Times Op-Ed pages. Although one might hope for some thumbnails, sketches or even some sort of explanation of how he arrived at some of his concepts or even some text on his thought process but alas that is not the case. As I stated before they let the work speak for itself. For a small reference book on Illustration, layout and design I highly recommend this and of leaving it near your computer. The cover featuring an Apple mouse turned into a hangman's noose, while quite possibly a clichéd image nowadays, was, back in its day something quite arresting. Clichéd or not this image could easily apply to the creative's need to look beyond the confines of keyboard and screen and search out new vista's of inspiration which I think this book displays quite capably.

According to Rick Poynor it was influential, eclectic, wide-ranging, experimental, distinctive, groundbreaking...      This book, on a subject that was previously practically unknown for me, is one of my top five in the last several years.
