Type Battle 31 // Slasher Magazine masthead

Ngoc Ngo's picture

Create a masthead for a magazine called "Slasher".

Winner take all, no holds barred. May the best designer win.

- Image size: 550 width x 400 height. 72 dpi
- Color: Black and White only (Red optional)
- Format: JPG or PNG

This is your chance to stretch your type muscles on a weekly basis. You have one week to create and submit your entry. Anyone may submit a design response to the challenge. You may enter as often as you wish. Post anytime. Critiques and comments are welcome throughout the game, from participants and spectators alike. Smack talk is encouraged.

As with any street battle, there is no panel of judges and no prize — only the ability to call yourself the best on the block.

So far, these are sinfully good.

Well, I was going to do a grid-based geometric sans, and then "slash" it somehow, but I ended up with this.

Matthew Lujan's picture

Okay, maybe I'm just lazy and not that good, but two things here: first, I figure, more oft than not, 'slashers' aren't big on advertising the fact that they are slashers, that it is something secretly hidden within, so that's why I stuck with just embellishing the A there within the sharp, straight-and-narrow rest of it; second, there's just a slight nod to HUSTLER magazine there with my font choice (fairly basic but classier), as I'm guessing slashers get off on their evil acts, as do - if this were just a mag for horror fans - horror fans getting off on the suspense and gore. I don't know. Forget I said anything. I suck. Just bored...

I dig that, Matthew!
My favourite so far is Aaron's first one. Wikkid.

pica pusher's picture

Andy, that is completely unexpected and hilarious.

Nina, coolest barcode evar.

I hope I get time to try something this week!

eliason's picture

I like Andy's best, too. But it's not anatomically correct - If you actually cut open letters, you'll find some (like A and H) actually have two bones running through the midsection.

Bendy's picture

Nina, hilarious covers, love it!

nina's picture

:) Thanks guys, it was a lot of fun in any case!

Quick and dirty effort: utilizing the quite ominous-looking Kingthings Spikeless Pro by Kevin King (recently reworked for my site ;) with a modified appendix to the h...
(Edit: looked even more evil in negative... ;)

Kottis's picture

Oh right, i'm Andy! I forgot that i abbreviated my name in my profile (it's really Andreas).

Anyway, thanks, i'm flattered! My favorite is the first one.

@eliason: Nuts! That's a great idea, wish i had thought of it! Might have to change it if i find the time.

Ronlewhorn's picture

thanks nina! your cover is great! super clean and cool direction for the concept!

We should have a type battle that is everything not to do in design. . . "WORST LOGO EVER" we did it in my office today and here's mine:

Let's see some more, Aaron!

nina's picture

Haha. That's pretty dang bad! I did that a couple years ago, for a friend of mine who taught a screen design class to beginners, and needed an example for what not to do in a logo / header image. It was fun. Great idea for a battle!

(Also, thanks :) )

Eyerman's picture

My favorite is still Craig's. But for something completely different....

Joe Pemberton's picture

@Randy I just realized that's a self portrait. Ouch.

@Ronlewhorn (Aaron). Nicely done. I think your first entry still in the lead for me. And welcome to Typophile.

@altaira The magazine cover definitely helps demonstrate the potential of this one.

Slashing: 2 inches
Nerve repair: 2 mm
Bandages: 2 miles
Doctors orders not to change diapers or do dishes: priceless

Merely a fleshwound!

Cool design, oprion, but maybe you should've modified the "L" character? To me it reads "SIASHER."

Very funny Chris :)

Nice one, James!

Zara Evens's picture

Great Battle, everyone! I am impressed at the variety and the mad skillz!

I am with Joe on this one - Aaron's first entry is SOLID, actually both are. And I'm thrilled to see that Randy is using his own blood! Way to invest yourself into your work ;)

The rest of y'all better get yer gloves out and throw some fancy punches if you plan on takin' this one.

(I love the battles because it allows me to use made-up wordz and talk trash)

dezcom's picture

I am sure others might want to take a stab at it as well, Zara.

Et tu, Brute?

dezcom's picture

Well I ain't no Lady MacBeth! :-)

rgraphix's picture

Nobody has used a picture of Slash yet? Ahhhh.

Matthew Lujan's picture

(Thanks Nina.)

B3N's picture

there are some beautifully clever bits here, especially the two by Ronlewhorn and by itc_james

unfortunatley I wasnt clever enought to think of them first, so heres my rather literal 5 minute effort.

B3N's picture

that body typography makes me feel a little bit ill.

pica pusher's picture

Ben, you think he should bury the body?

dezcom's picture

only if he cuts it up into a thousand pieces first. :-)

Vasilis Siminas's picture

Hello everyone. This is my view of "slasher".

Jon Evenchen's picture

Really like that vasilis. Very nice, especially the falling 'slashed' parts of type. The only thing is that it feels too mid-century modern. Maybe a combo of this concept with Jan's and itc_James take on it. (which are both great, BTW)

haloosinayeshun's picture

my first battle!?

B3N's picture

Very stylish, although, and I don't know wether you will view this as a insult or complement, it does remind me a lot of Jonathon Barnbrook.

beejay's picture

went for the over-the-top grindhouse approach

here's the application of it on a mag cover

Vasilis Siminas's picture

Thakn you Jon E. This is my first battle too.I hope like it my slasher to everyone..

Nora Mysiak's picture

Ok, not very inventive, but with all the fabulous blood and chocolate drippings, I thought there might be an alternative. Commercialism isn't as outwardly disturbing as an ax, but it can be equally as devastating.
