miha - very different and very nice!

chrisL (re: your 2nd submission) - is there a name for that type of lettering? the italic reminds me of some sort of car logo - maybe upper end eg. ferrari etc...

Did somebody step on your 't', Jos?

Some of you need to make your stems a whole lot thicker. Not you, Alex. The stem width is almost the x-height in your latest entry. Very impressive and very defiant!

Jos Buivenga's picture

@ Craig:

:-) On second looks it feels indeed a bit beheaded.

Jongseong's picture

Here's a quick freehand sketch since I'm too defiant to take the time to digitize it.

Ok, a bit out of control!
What the heck, let's get crazy :p

George,
Fantastic! That is a good one, Yassou!!!

" (re: your 2nd submission) - is there a name for that type of lettering?"

Balance,

I don't know if there is a name for what I submitted. I didn't intend to mimic any style. I just took the brief and decided I would make it very high contrast and that is what came out. There are car nameplate typefaces out there but I think that Randy's 1st one is much more in that style than mine is.

"Damn, ChrisL... only 249 characters to go. "

Michael, Don't tempt me! I am already in over my head! :-)

Very impressive, George Triantafyllakos! My favorite, alongside Randy's already praised entry.

Ok, last one.

David, that is one crazy ligature! Love it.

Quincunx's picture

Woah, I'm very much digging Ruben's last one.

AGL: Is that stem really 1/2 the x-height? If you are going to break the rules, you might want to choose a different one to break.

AGL's picture

Sorry - Fixed (after this one I am going to need green glasses...).

Last one for the week

I probably shouldn't have posted that freehand sketch. How embarrassing. Here's hopefully a better entry:

Chris, that looks fantastic! I think the oblique version will look even better.

Randy's alphabet is also lovely. I love how great typeface designs arise from the ashes of type battles.

feeling quite defiant myself.

Looks like Helvetica got graffiti blasted :-)

Brian,

Are your swash glyphs the standard ones or would you consider them alts?

ChrisL

Jongseong's picture

Chris, I'll have to draw a few more letters before I can really decide!

I started out drawing a pretty boring Bodoni look-alike (see earlier sketch), but decided to turn it into an upright cursive with swashes to make it interesting. If I were to create a usable alphabet out of this though, I realize I would have to provide alts.

I'm not sure whether the swash glyphs or the tamer versions will be the default form. I'll probably have to design hundreds of ligatures if I want to keep all the swashes, as they are going to cause a lot of clashes. Or maybe context-specific swashes. I'm inclined to try to keep all the swashes and see how that works out.

But I'm certainly not going to whip up an entire lowercase alphabet in a day like you did! I'm still amazed how fast you work. You and Randy, also Christian Robertson from previous battles...

beejay's picture

thought i'd try to go thicker with this one, closer to 1:1. alphabet still very much a work in progress.

Final (late) entry - thanks Jos for the Interpolated Nudge tool tip.

Brian (beejay)... beautiful, and very nice looping. Well done! Wow!

ChrisL, very fine extrapolation of the "difficult characters" and a great letter set. Awesome! Tuesday dude!

You guys really amaze me.

thanks Michael. You could grab a steel pen and partake maybe? (it'd fun to see some ink in this thread. And you'd probably put us all to shame. :) )

Hi guys:

I managed to create some designs on Friday night and when I tried to post them on the next morning, for some strange reasons my "insert image" botton wasn't working and I thought the entry was already closed...

I later posted my designs under the title of "embarrassment" the next day- can the moderator please remove that post? thanks.

Oxford defines "defiant" as " showing bold disobedience"- so, here you go...
